i currently have a pair of PPs and was thinking of upgrading to pair of v6's. i am wondering if the v6's sound better than the PPs and is worth the upgrade, if it is an upgrade at all. i generally liked the sound of the PPs and were my first "good" sounding phones but would like to experiment with other phones.

i have no way of listening to the v6's myself since they are relatively hard to find at retail chains =/

I think the V6 has more treble and a larger dynamic punch than the Porta Pro. I think the Porta Pro's are warmer and smoother. Although the V6 sound is more refined in comparison to other other sub $100 sony headphone products, they still have that sony sound of a funny shrilly treble with a heavily tacked on bass.

Have you thought about Grados?

The Sony MDR-CD780s are cheaper, more easily driven, more comfortable, and better sounding than the Sony V6s, IMHO. I have both. Just food for thought.

Closed, rugged & portable = V6s, no question.

Maybe. But accurate semantics is important when describing things like audio.

Nasty could mean a lot of things. It could mean distortion, graininess, muddiness (which is not the case with the mdr-v6), or piercing (which seems to be more a realistic criticism).

I'm assuming, by nasty, that you mean piercing (or over-emphasized), rather than grainy.

it seems like i will be in the hunt for a pair of v6's in that case since they seem to fit my needs much more than any other headphone out there (for the price). but...it seems people either love them or hate them.

I know the Sacramento Fry's stocks the V6, so you could try them from there and return them if they are not to your taste.
