the Goldring DR150 is a good choice for your first higher end headphone,
 
but for japanese song that sometime gets a little screechy you might want something a little darker.. The panasonic rp-htf600 probably? not sure will it be good for classical though.

Sennheiser hd 25 1 ii is good and is portable to.

If by classic you mean the music found in the show Angel Beats, then it seems like your music listening consists mostly of Vocaloid covers, Japanese songs like J-Pop and J-Rock if I had to guess, and piano. If so, I think you should look into the Shure SRH 840 ($130) or KRK KNS 8400 ($120).

Keep in mind a lot of the music he is going to be listening to has a lot of electronic influences as well. A lot of (modern) anime opening and endings tend to lean on synths and the like rather than live instruments and there is probably gonna be some rock in there. All and all, sounds like TC is going to need a can that does well or decent with classical and vocal, but it's forte should definitely be focused on pop music. Do you think the Beyerdynamic 770 will work well with this type of deal Mal? You seem to recommend it a lot.

Yeah, you pretty much hit the nut on the head with what he is probably going for. The Shure seems like a nice choice for this range.

Not to completely threadjack as the OP seems to be looking at what I am also looking for. However I also listen to more modern pop/hiphop stuff too and I have a E7/E9 setup for my laptop. I was thinking about the HE-300. But I know that J&R currently has the D2000 for $230. Which one would be better? I usually use IEMs but now I don't really do any portable listening anymore and plus my RE0s broke.

If your interested and don't mind waiting. The D2000 are available at J&R for around $200-$250. You have to call to ask for the price, the sales rep probably will say $250 but you have room to haggle to $200 just say you saw someone else get it for that price. Their stock is backordered though.
