Hey you all,

As my topic states is Cowon C2 capable of driving these phones without an amp? I've read some great reviews about these phones but never got the chance testing them out. I listen to all kind of music like jazz, blues, rock, pop and R&B. If not capable, what other over-head closed headphones in the same price range would you recommend?

Note: I like good quality heavy bass. Clear mids and highs but not harsh sounding.

Appreciate all feedback.

Massive bass and clear forward mids? That's two different headphones you're talking about, not the one.

If you're a basshead then you're better off getting a dedicated basshead headphone and something
more natural and bass light when you're in the mood.

Probably yes, the HD380 has very good sensitivity, and does not require much power.

It does not have heavy bass. The bass extends low, but on average the frequency response is neutral (which is not surprising given the intended purpose of the HD380).

P.S.: here is a frequency response / sound pressure at 1Vrms graph of this headphone. I do not know if it is reliable, but the only review I have read seems to generally agree with the graph.

Hi, I just registered to respond to this claim:
"It does not have heavy bass. The bass extends low, but on average the frequency response is neutral"

I have had HD 380 for quite some time and I have to disagree. Either it has too overpowering bass or something else in the spectrum is too quiet so it makes the bass seem powerful. Anyway, I don't consider the sound to be neutral, there's just too much bass power. This causes fatigue quickly - particularly on recordings having more bass than they should have.

Combined with their relatively low comfort level... I gave them to my father. :)

I actually enjoyed my HD 215 more than HD 380, despite the bass being "nearly non-existent" on the former. (I quoted that because I think headphone bass is one of the most over-hyped things I have ever witnessed - the average expectation for bass is just too high among consumers - to the point where many people consider Porta Pro to be some ideal of headphone sound)
