Greetings to all.   I have been a die-hard AKG fan for many years, but I am now willing to stray from the reservation and seek the "Sennheiser sound" that so many of you speak of.  However, I do not want a set of cans made in China.  I use the headphones for Blu-ray, DVD and streaming Netflix with a little Pandora thrown in.
So, where are the 598's made?

Unfortunately, I think they may be made China.

They're actually still on their way to me, get here tomorrow.

The HD598s don't bear the hallmark of the famous "Sennheiser Sound". No veil to speak of here. They are, in fact, very neutral with a some low order harmonic emphasis in the upper midrange/treble region, making these cans sound quite "golden", along with very good bass extension with some proper amplification. And even though they are Made In China, I can assure you the build quality is actually very good. After a year of frequent use they still look new...

Hi there, kind of an odd first post really, but I just found this thread at headphile:

http://www.headphiles.org/index.php/topic,1107.0.html

It basically states that the (new) AKG's are also made in China, hope that this doesn't bumb you out (not too much for that matter). The posts go on on to outline the current trend of many brands switching production to China.

There isn't any mention of loss of quality, though, as you pointed out as well.

BTW, I have recently ordered a pair of AKG's K240, and I was hoping that they were indeed made in Austria, but, after reading that thread, I'm guessing they won't be. :frowning2:
Oh well such is the way of the world, I'll be happy if they sound good to me.

Just got my new Q701s, and they also say Austria.

Thanks to all who replied.  I always get a good education from all the good folks on the forums at Head-Fi.  After much reflection, research and looking at my mostly empty wallet, I have decided, at least 98.795%, that I will be purchasing the Beyerdynamic AD990Pro's.  On paper and reading reviews they seem to depart from the "neutral" AKG sound, that I love, but project a better bass profile that I think I am seeking...........And, they are still made in Germany...........So, we shall see, hopefully soon.

Glad to hear it!
Here's hoping my new, more budget k240's will be made in Austria. Unfortunately it will take a week or so to get here, but I'll report back on this thread then.

Well I have received my AKG 240 MkII today and I can confirm that they are made in China. On the box, it says this:

"Desgined and engineered in Austria by AKG Acoustics. Made in China (P.R.C.)"

It does't really matter to me really, as they're sounding great to my ears.

Although I would also like to put my money somewhere else.

So, did you go with the Beyerdynamics DT990? How do they compare to your AKG?
Cheers.

Yeah, I noticed that my AKG 240S are also made in China, BUT, I have to say they sound very good and exhibits the AKG "sound".  I have not purchased the Beyerdynamics DT990's yet, have to wait until after the first of December.  I have been going between the Sennheiser HD598,558 or do I really need the HD518??  I think that I'm leaning toward the Beyer's though. Let your 240's burn in and they even get better............Enjoy
