I owned the 900s and own the 750s and SigPros... really looking for an open can for trance. I assume that the 2900s are the ticket? bump.

No... the 2900s aren't going to give you the open headphone feeling you're looking for. My D7000s were much much better for trance, both in terms of soundstage and bass (IMO). I see you have the Signature Pros, those are really excellent for trance too why would you even want to get the 2900s? If you're looking for something open sounding with good bass can't beat the TH900s. If thats out of the price range, the LCD2s get a lot of fond reviews (though I didn't like them or the HE500s much - preferred the Sig Pros and D7ks to be honest). Might also want to try the T1 - much better soundstage than the 2900s, a tad less bass though.

the 2900's are without a doubt a great pair of headphones but they can't compare to the hd 650's
I've been running them both through my hp-p1 and the soundstage on the 650's is far superior with more separation and "smoothness".
On a related note I was wondering if a bifrost dec with the woo audio wa6se would pair well together running off my iPod?

The HD650s and the 2900s are very different sounding headphones (I don't feel one is far superior to the other personally).. While I enjoy a warmer less sibilant sound, I think a lot of people are split about how they hear harsh/smooth treble. That said the HD650s are a great headphone as well, I wouldn't say they are far superior when it comes to detail separation (if you meant they have better soundstage - that I agree with), but the 2900s are a very "detailed" headphone. with a warmer amp I would go with the 2900s, with a more neutral amp I would lean towards the 650s.. really depends on setup and personal pref.

I also can't imagine anybody sating the 880 has more body than the Pro 2900. Using an NFB 3-->C-2.2 those were the biggest differences between the two imo. The DT 880 (32 ohm) was extremely thin and brittle in direct comparison-to the extreme. And although I do feel the mids are recessed, it's more like the bass is in 'front of' the mids, rather than actually 'drowning them out', like the Pro 900 did. I fully feel that they deserve the higher price class than the 880/K702 level. My .02.

I have both the Lcd-2 rev-2 and the pro2900 with a custom cable. I honestly prefer the pro2900 for trance, although the lcd-2 have a larger soundstage; the pro2900 sound more exciting, have more bass impact, and just feel like they are superior at conveying the energy of the genre. I also think that the cable I'm using makes a noteworthy difference, as it increases clarity and the size of the soundstage which are two of the telling features of trance-proficient headphones.

Got mine today. Immediately I noticed a huge improvement in positioning and spaciousness over my HFI-580, but I'm not a fan of the harsher highs (the main reason I didn't go for the PRO 900). Hopefully that'll smooth out with time.

That's interesting; I've heard the opposite from most reviewers. A lot of people said that they sound like an improved HFI-580, but the 580's highs aren't nearly this prominent.

It may as well be that the treble is less prominent, but the bass on the Pro 900's tends to take away that pain from the treble. The Pro 2900's bass is considerably subdued compared to the Pro 900s, making the treble quite prominent. There is nothing hiding that metallic treble.

Not hating the bass on the Pro 2900s. I think it has the best bass quality on any headphone I have ever heard. I just wish it was more prominent, as the mids on the Pro 2900 are distant for no real reason.

Hmm... well hopefully I'll be able to get used to it. I sold my DT990 because of those highs. I don't like thunderous bass though, so I don't regret staying away from the PRO 900.

I wouldn't call the bass on the Pro 900's thunderous. More than the DT990s, but very well controlled. Oh who am I kidding? The bass on the Pro 900 is master class.

The Pro 2900's bass is a bit shy for me. Less than the DT880s, more than the Q701.

I actually find myself tuning it down a bit. But even so it sounds amazing. I'm liking these a lot with albums that have a slightly dark production.

That's the good thing about the Pro 2900, it's pretty bright and brings out detail from darker sounding tracks.

But on bright sounding tracks, and especially sibilant ones... the Pro 2900 is ruthless to the ears.

The Pro 2900 definitely favors a warm source or amp.

If the Pro 2900 was around $250, I'd recommend it. It's a good headphone, just not at the price.

So I've noticed.

I'm using an E10 which is slightly warm, and plan on upgrading to a Nuforce HDP soon. Hopefully that will bring a nice change.
