HiFiMAN HE-500 Review

Hey Jasio, you will not regret the Lyr HE500 combo, let me know how it sounds after 120 hours; it'll be pretty awesome.

I graduated from law school just last year also, yes music can be very catharthic and part of a healthy stress management regime. Something I would also recommend you try is to roll in a vintage 60s tube. I was VERY skeptical that changing out the tube might change the sound, I thought subtle at best, but once I rolled in the Telefunkens... the difference was night and day. It'll take you 10 seconds to see that everything has improved dramatically from top to bottom, everything will sound so 3D and life like, increased resolution, increased extension top to bottom and more detail retrieval, better seperation. Just wanted to share because you seem to be in the exact same position I was about a month ago.

Does Edinburgh even have a Hi-Fi community? I haven't been able to find any real "high end" stores except for HiFi Corner, James Morrow, Retro Reproduction, and Loud+Clear.

there is also The Home Cinema Centre, AMP3 / Advancedheadphones.com and id sort of count Richer Sounds too ish.  oh and there is Red Dog Audio too.

I don't think he bought the HE500 :p

The HE500 is a headphone I'm tempted to buy but I need to try them before buying them at that kind of price. I can buy before trying on headphones that don't cost so much but this is past that limit. I have gotten more interested in orthos as well recently..

Mark the question I have for you is if the HE500 sounded good enough for you to buy them?

your right i didnt buy them they were loaners.

are they good enough for me to buy them, thats not such an easy question.  given im a rather poor student £800 is a lot, that would cover my gas and electricity useage for an entire year and more.  so would i spend that much on them, no i dont think i will.  i dont live being tied to desk (reason i have the RS180) and though its amazingly good its sound signature isnt perfect for me.  should they retune one that has a sound sig like the RE-262 then i suspect yes i would.  i realise that im way more treble sensitive than most though so for many the tuning will be fine but it would be too much for me all the time.  that said the treble is incredible to behold.

once i have a grown up job i suspect i will acquire a pair however.

Ah, I did explore the tube rolling thread for the Lyr a bit but it seems tastes and choice of tubes has changed fairly drastically from the beginning of the thread, to the latest posts. The Telefunken tubes were on the pricey side I believe ($50-100/pair?) But I don't see why I wouldn't want to tube roll. I decided to give these JJ tubes at least 300 hours and then start poking at different tubes- it's too early to start fiddling as I believe I wont' be able to properly compare the stock tubes to anything else without proper burn-in.

That's a good attitude to have although hard to believe your story as a poor student considering how many earphones you have  I did the same with customs and waited until I had a job to buy one and was worth the wait.

You can always sell blood, plasma and other bodily functions, start a bake sale, sell something on craigslist for 10x what it is worth, toss some paint at a  piece of paper and hope there is a millionaire out there who thinks you are brilliant.  Lots of ways to help fund expensive audio equipment jkjk :)

well actually you cant sell blood or plasma here, cant imagine its illegal but it is not done.  actually i think the only place you can do that is the US and honestly i find it a horrible notion.

what a hater :p

I actually picked up a HE500 and it sounds quite nice. I used the leather pads and wanted to try putting the velour back on but was unable to. Whoever designed that pad system must have been on crack..by far the worst system ever. I really like how it sounds out of my V200 amp. The only thing is i wish it had the same cable as my HE-4 since it is lighter and much more flexible. I emailed head direct hoping they would sell me a HE-4 cable and their HE6 cable is too expensive for a cable imo.

HE-500 is my 2nd favorite headphone. It has its moments - so a late afternoon photo shoot after some good music listening with my HE-500 was mandated.

Does anyone know what the difference in sound is between the HE-500 AND HE-5LE  models ?

I'd also like to hear input on this topic. The HE-5LE seems like sort of a "forgotten" headphone at this point, but I'm curious if there is any valid reason for that or not.

IMO the HE500 does everything better than the HE5LE (especially bass)...and it does it with a lot less power. They're dropping in price lately but aren't as popular anymore. I don't think they deserve to be forgotten though as they're still a nice headphone.

does anyone know or have a tutorial somewhere on how to put the old pads back on?

What you need to do is to angle the plastic tabs a bit (gentle bending) and attach all four tabs to the earcup at the same time, as opposed to one at a time or two at a time. It's not easy and it took me a good thirty minutes to figure out how to do it. I hear Dr. Fang will be offering a new velour version of the pads with the new attachment system. Not sure when that will be though... I also read somehwere that Beyerdynamic pads will work with the new attachment system on the leather earpads? BTW, major congrats on the HE500
