How much does the HD280 Pro isolate when there's NO music going through it? in other words, how would its NRR rate if it were simply an earmuff and not a headphone? Does their claimed isolation rating only apply to the headphone in active use?

With no music playing the HD280 offers some isolation but is better descibed as more of a muffling effect. i.e. if a TV is playing in the same room, at a normal voulme, you can still hear it but the sound is muffled quite a bit. Once the music starts, its hard to hear anything going on around you (TV, phone ringing, etc.).

I just tried it for you. Like spaceman said, anything you can hear without headphones you can hear when you have them on, it's just quieter and muffled. I could still hear the hum of the air conditioner and the clicking of keys as the people around me typed.

Also FYI, it's a reasonably warm day here (25 deg celsius or so), and I can't wear the 280s for more than about 15 minutes because my ears get too warm. On cooler days they're fine.
