Ripping Program

Thread Starter

Hey guys I'm looking for a free easy to use program that would allow me to rip cd's to a lossless format and then to mp3 for use on my ipod any ideas? I've heard of eac but I have also heard it is really hard to use.

If you're on a Mac, I really like XLD http://tmkk.pv.land.to/xld/index_e.html; on Windows, I use Foobar 2000 http://www.foobar2000.org/ with "Open audio cd" and then right-click, Convert (totally customizable, pretty straightforward).

EAC is not hard to use at all. The newest versions can pretty much rip to flac with little to no setup. If you do want it properely setup though, there are tons of tutorials that walk you through it, just google "eac flac tutorial".

EAC is a great program -

Once upon a time the installation process was challenging as the preferred encoder was not bundled with the installer.  You had to download the encoder separately and literally point EAC at it.  EAC would then open the encoder .exe during every rip.  It was fun to watch actually, like the computer was possessed.

Installation today (V1.0 beta 3) is a piece of cake.

However, it is very feature rich, which can be off-putting to some.  The access to CDDB for automatic track naming is pretty awesome, a big time saver.  Handles, FLAC, WMA, MP3, etc.  Not sure about ALAC though.
