M50's are very nice and beat monster Beats easily

Buy them off Amazon, there are a lot of chinese fakes on Ebay.

Not so fast, people who would otherwise like the Beats' sound signature for their impactful bass would not like the M50s.  Saying the M50s easily best the Beats is highly subjective depending on the listener, and most of head-fi is guilty of blindly recommending the M50 in place of the Beats because they do not care for that type of impactful bass the beats provide that's often their selling point for their buyers.

I'm not saying it's wrong to recommend the M50 as an alternative to the Beats, but there's other alternative on the market that provide the same type of impactful bass the Beats have that the M50s don't have.  The M50s extend low and are above neutral on the bass front, but it's not a very visceral bass.  The ultrasone 580 is a better choice imo.

Ultrasone 580 is a good alternative for that impact the Beats series have
Sony XBs are also a good contender

I have the M50s, they are good, less colored than the Beats, detailed but not as bass heavy

well

i mainly listen to alternative and soft rock i rarely ever listen to House/trans/hiphop or rap

so Bass impactfulness isn't a priority right?
again i'm a complete audiophile nooby so correct me if i'm wrong

Well it depends.  For me personally, I prefer a bunch of midbass impact for most rock that have kickdrums, as it gives more life to the genre, but having a headphone with bloated bass won't be so keen either, as both kick drums and bass guitars tend to muddy the songs.  Ultrasone 580 isn't so bloated in its bass quite like the beats, but the M50 does offer a more proper kind of bass that sounds deeper.

There's also the whole world of open headphones too that you might like, but that all depends if you're going to stay inside with them or not.

oh no the Headphones i'm buying are for the sole purpose of walking around in the city listening to music
which brings me to my second point how's the passive noise cancelation on the M50's?
