Koss Pro DJ 100 - The Budget King

Just got the sheepskin pads recently and I'm really enjoying the dj100s with them over the m50 pads. I think the sound stage and treble got a tad smaller after the switch but that's fine with me. Also, I think sheepskin pads are way more comfortable than the m50s.

Hi everyone, i was reading through this forum and these headphone seemed very good for the price. I could purchase the TBSE version at my local audio shop, but before i decide to buy these, i want to know how the bass compared to the m50 or dt880s. Also, if i did purchase the headphone, what would be a cheap headphone amp that would work well with the dj100s? And how would the ipod video 5.5 and the samsung s3 sound on these headphones? Would you suggest this headphone for this type of music?:

I have no problems paying $30 considering it sounds as good as my HD-650 (with the same dac and amp). I'm going to go crazy and buy a fancy amp for it someday too. Maybe i'll be dumb and get a Lyr + Bifrost for it

To me the idea of it being only $55 and sounding this good is kind of funny.

Koss headphones usually sound better than what they cost. Just look at the KSC75 and now the Koss UR-22V. When you use HM5 pads on the UR-22v there is no way that's $19 (or $40) headphone. Sounds as good as some $80 headphones.
Too bad it has the clamp of death. M50 and V6 pads also fit that. It has more of a fun sound signature, but  less so with better pads.

Oh and I will say that some of the Koss headphones are HORRIBLE. I guess they can't all be good. I think I threw out my 4AAAT. I don't know why mine sounds so bad. I'm sure the 4AA is much better. My 4AAAT was very dark and severely muffled.
Have you seen the Koss MV1 graphs on Goldenears? They're very very disturbing but I don't always trust graphs. The MV1 wasn't that bad.

The Koss A/250 is also just plain weird, but it does impress me in some areas. I think i'd only love that thing on a very warm setup. It has some of the thinnest mids i've heard.

I want to try the new Koss over-ear headphones, but they're so ugly I will never buy them. They look like a rainbow has thrown up all over them. Seriously why is it so hard for Koss to release a black or plain grey version? I suggested they do this on their Facebook page but no such luck. They look ultra comfortable too (but kind of cheap). Think it's called the Rukus. The over ear version is the RUK50.

I agree with you on how Koss has some amazing stuff. I had a pair of M50's at one point and I sold them because I couldn't get over how I enjoyed my portapro (paid $30) and KSC75 ($15) so much more. And I found them much more comfortable than the M50s (pleather pads are really uncomfy for me). A few months ago I broke my KSC75 and I recabled them (probably spent $15 on the recable). I then bought two more pairs of KSC75 for gifts/backup when they were on sale.

I may get some velour pads but they are hard to find shipped to Canada :frowning2: it is more of an investment because I can probably use them for future headphones as well. You should throw up a simple table of pads you have used that work well/badly with the DJ100 in the first post. Good stuff on all the pad experimentation.

For those wondering about m50's,I haven't heard the M50's in a while but there is a good chance I find the DJ100's better :)

Damn I want some velour pads but I can't justify paying $30-$40 on pads for a $60 headphone :p

Also, I just noticed the top reviewer on amazon is tdockweiler. good stuff! I only noticed when you mentioned about poking holes into the pearstone pads haha

I justify it by saying it was ONLY $60 for the headphone. :p  Comfort is as important as sound to me and I usually don't like pleather since they make my ear sweat.

I'm really curious if a dac/amp would make it sound better, especially if it lessens the harshness/fatiguing I'm experiencing.  Though I'm guessing a lot of it comes from bad recording on the anisong/j-pop that I usually listen to.

Would you guys recommend the Schiit M&M combo or should I save up and get a tube amp and dac instead?  Also picked up a HD650 from the classified so it will be powering that also.

... Ironically enough I NEVER liked the Pro Dj 100... in fact I LOVED the Porta Pro [omg totall worth every penny] as well as the Pro Dj 200, but the orignal Koss Pro Dj 100 sounded terrible to me [I bought two pairs as well]

Can any one confirm that the TBSE is a pro dj 200 remodel? I had heard that at once point

The DJ200 and TBSE should be the same, but nobody has confirmed it. Same specs and everything.
The reason that the DJ100's you've tried might sound a little worse is that some of the older versions didn't have holes drilled down to the aluminum. The newer DJ100s apparently do and this may explain some slight differences.

I've heard the DJ200 at Best Buy and it sounds exactly like my DJ100 and TBSE. Maybe I could find some minor differences if I did an A/B comparisons.

It's possible the TBSE or a DJ100 with the holes drilled deeper may give more treble.

I never liked the Porta Pro, but loved the UR-55 and KSC75. UR-55 is a fun headphone, but nowhere near as good as the DJ100/TBSE. Fans of the Porta Pro would love the UR-55 maybe. The DJ100 is closer to the KSC75. Both use titanium coated drivers.

M50 has a lot more bass. The latest M50 in the white box doesn't have that much more, but those who like more bass emphasis should get something other than the DJ100. The DJ100 has only very slightly above neutral bass. The DT-880 probably has better low bass extension but i've never compared them. Many people won't agree with me on the bass of the DJ100, but these days a lot of people think boosted mid-bass is neutral sounding

The Fiio E11 is ok and maybe the E7. My suggestion is to try them from your Ipod and see what you think. If the bass is sloppy then an amp might help. Sometimes they can be more fatiguing or thinner without extra power. Not always.

You can also check the first post for some other amp/source suggestions.

The TBSE has the most resolution I have herd in any other of the other Koss cans I tried and think it is their best can.
The Porta pro and other variants are nice but don't have the realism of the TBSE.
I should have kept mine I will miss them.
I have moved onto bigger fish but from memory the TBSE would fair well against Any can.
Repeat after me..
TBSE ... TBSE...
Choose it over anything sub $200 range.
Yes that means over the m50 in overall musicality.
Not nitpicking about bass if your a basshead then go elsewhere.

Today i went YOLO and got the TBSE for 65 and listening to them while i type this. First thing i noticed from these headphones is that  they are super power hungry(maybe little exaggerated) driven from samsung s3 i had to turn to 12 for comfortable level for me. Im on the bus right now so i cant really do a proper impression but it sounds good for me so far. Thinking about an amp for this and my m50 pads will come in the coming weeks

Watch this with the DJ100. It's really amusing!

Testing the Modi vs ODAC now. Right now I think the Modi is about 5% better (to my ears and not yours). Shh, don't tell anyone.
Both sound completely flat and when comparing them it's about as bad as trying to hear a mouse fart from 100 feet away.
The Modi seems to have better imaging, easier to spot detail and a slightly better (more accurate) soundstage.
They're both very good. It seems like when you listen to things in front of you on the ODAC, the distance is less accurate or hard to judge.
For example, when listening to Tony Bennett I could determine the proper distance of where he was at singing in front of me. On the ODAC it's like I can't tell as easily. Kind of nit-picking,
ODAC seems like 1% more clear

How big is the Magni power brick? I guess I should ask on the appropriate thread... Just realized I've never seen a pic of it tho, struck me as odd. Even Schiit don't have one up, tho at least they sell extra ones reasonably cheap.

Slighty above... well the DJj 200 [;ets assume the Old 200 is the New 100] Yes the Dj 200 I heard had nice bass. It was really a closed CHEAP dt 880. Nice clean sound  I though!
