I've had X-FI Xtrememusic for about 5 years now, a card that has been functioning very nicely for me, though there has been a few things i've never really fully understood or used, and since i've just ordered a X-FI Titanium HD, i would hope some of the stuff could be cleared up.

Anyway, my Xtrememusic got 3 modes, Game, Entertainment and Audio Creation, i'll guess the HD have the same/something similar. Is there any sound difference between these modes? Am thinking with every other feature turned off, like EAX, Crystalizer, CMSS, as until now i've only really used Game Mode, even though if i've been playing music, watching movies or gaming.

Another thing is, if am not mistaken, Creative got two control panels for their cards, "Audio Control Panel" and the "Console Launcher, is there a reason why they've done this? As i feel it's really enough with only one...

That's it for now, and thanks in advance =)

Game Mode: Needed for EAX 5 support (and proper EAX 3/4 rather than emulated in OpenAL; don't confuse these with the EAX presets for given rooms that add reverb/chorus effects to all audio output). Supports CMSS-3D Headphone for binaural surround. There are other features as well, but those two are the big ones to be concerned about while gaming.

Entertainment Mode: I don't use this mode, but it has a lot of the X-Fi "enhancements" available.

Audio Creation Mode: The recommended mode for music playback (NOT Entertainment Mode, shockingly enough), because ASIO and bit-matched playback are only available in this mode, making it the most uncolored and pure. Note that enabling bit-matched playback automatically disables a lot of the "enhancements", like the Crystalizer, EAX presets, and even the equalizer.

I don't know why they've done this mode thing or even have two sets of control panels (normally, I'd think the Audio Control Panel should be enough, but there's a few features I don't know how to access other than through the Console Launcher). Wouldn't it be nice to have EAX 5.0 support and CMSS-3D Headphone along with ASIO and bit-matched playback available all at once, without any mode switches that might lock up the whole computer in the worst of scenarios?

Hmm i see, i notice that if i switch between the different modes on my XtremeMusic soundcard, the windows volume resets to 30, is it possible to stop this in some way? Make it stay at the volume i want it in between mode changes?

Entertainment mode works fine for music, as long as WASAPI is used, giving as good an output as ASIO, IMHO. While Game Mode does enable all gaming features, Audio Creation Mode goes the bit-matched playback route, so we can consider Entertainment mode slightly like a jack of all trades, mainly on the sound tweaking area.

So basically, Audio Creation Mode is good if you want bit-matched playback, but if you like to tune your sound, you're better off with Entertainment Mode. Game Mode is, like its name suggests, meant for gaming usage :)

There are different control panels because there are different options between them. Ideally, Audio Control Panel should contain the few features that are only on Audio Console, but it seems someone on marketing decided that there was a need for nifty UIs rather than streamlining, ending up with scattered options between two different control panels.

BTW, issues arise when people forget to close apps that are calling for audio hardware before switching modes. It is mentioned on a few places, on the software and manual itself.
