The Washington Post writes Quote:

During the six-month period ending in June 2003, only 100,000 DVD-Audio discs were sold, compared with 245 million CDs, the Recording Industry Association of America reports. Even traditional vinyl records outsold DVD-Audio -- by a factor of six to one.

Rather than growing, sales of DVD-Audio discs are actually down from the same period a year ago. The RIAA does not track SACD sales.

I'm surprised the RIAA tracks DVD-audio at all. Hard to keep track of anything when you have your head up your ass.

I wonder how SACD is doing.

Alright Music Fanatic, it seems to me that you don't like DVD-Audio which is fine because I don't care. DVD-Audio is still here. There are more titles and universal players being released through this year. The Brofman Investment Group & Warner label didn't decide to drop DVD-Audio. By the way, DVD-Audio edges SACD in terms of detail, 3D holography, and multimedia content. Take that!

The article said they aren't tracking SACD. And I can understand why. We don't know who is buying SACDs because they are hi-rez, or because they are hybrids and they are using the Red Book layer.

You are certainly welcome to your own opinions, but please exercise more care in ascribing opinions to others. I have some three dozen DVD-As, am on record as saying I think the differences between SACD and DVD-As are not perceptible, and I own three universal players.

That they decided not to drop it, doesn't actually sound good. It almost sounds like a condemned man with a stay of execution. At least reword that to make it sound better!

We have been through this flame-war about SACD vs. DVD-A. Each has its own advantages and proponents. Most would agree that both are equal.
P.S. the multimedia, we can live without. Do you realise what a pain it is to need a monitor each time you need to listen to music.

This I heartily agree with. Also, incompatibility with redbook players is a pain. While some DVD-As may address this in the future, I'm not sure it will take off. And a lot of the time, I just want to listen to a recording in my car.

DVD-A does need to bridge the gap between redbook and DVD-A a bit better. I see no reason, for example, why one could not have side one redbook and side 2 DVD-A. They need to figure this out, or SACD will eat their lunch.

DVD-A is the superior format, IMHO. It would be too bad if it went the way of the betamax.

I think jefemeister had something to sya about double layered DVD-A hybrids. Something in the lines of having more than one surface for the transport to grip, I think.

I don't know why Matsu****a & Co. are so dumb in that case. Apparently all that piracy paranoia has made them blind. All they'd need to do was to offer a dvd-a decoder driver for Windows free for private and non-commercial use as well as to give away cheap licences for dvd-a creation to those who make dvd authoring/burning software. I'd promise huge success!

Yes, it will be a success alright, they just will not make any money.

It is a no-win situation for them at present.

SACD is not an officially recognised format
