Hi,
I'm not sure if this is the correct place to ask such a question or if I'm better off at an audiologist's, but: I just found out while playing with the sinegen application from the 'equalize your headphones' thread that I hear differently in both ears, i.e. at certain frequency ranges - one for me is the 500 Hz to 1 KHz range - one ear hears louder than the other or one ear has a peak such as described in the 'equalize your headphones' thread while the other doesn't. Has anybody else experienced this and can give me more information and does this have to do with the shape of my outer ear or is it a mild hearing loss in one ear? I have had mild tinnitus before.
Would appreciate any answers!

I really think you should go and see an audiologist.
any other symptom?

Thanks for the replies!
I will head to an audiologist and get my ears cleaned and checked. This is better news than I had hoped for haha.. I thought it was permanent!

do you have some tinnitus too?

I do, and I wondered if It can be caused by earwax ...
will see an audiologist next month.

yeah.. some mild tinnitus, but it isn't bad, I hear a little ringing in absolute silence, but not otherwise. Have had some random ringing in one ear for a couple of minutes at a time though. Maybe the damage is already done, I think I don't hear as high as the mean for my age bracket?
Hmm, I'm not sure tinnitus is caused by earwax, seems to defeat common sense, doesn't it?

i've heard people saying that the pressure caused by an ear wax blockage on the eardrum can cause tinnitus.

+1 for someone believing it's probably just earwax.  Every time I've felt my hearing was off that's what it's been.  You should get it checked out either way.

Try cleaning your ears yourself first with a q-tip or something. If it fails, then see a professional. You don't want to be paying just to have them "professionally" clean your ears :p

I have this same problem, except I think mine may be more serious. A couple years back I had an ex-gf that open hand slapped me on the friggin ear. Pretty sure it blew out my left ear drum. Really should see a doctor about this....

A couple years back?  This hasn't bothered you enough to see a doctor already?

Well, I've always had ear problems to some degree. As a  kid I was stricken by earaches all the **** time, and had tubes in my ears twice to drain the fluid out from behind my ear drums. Just recently I read about using peroxide to clean earwax out so I poured some in my right ear, felt nice and tingly, then poured some in my left and it was literally some of the most incredible pain I've ever felt in my life. Pretty sure this was due to a perforated eardrum. Also I notice bass doesnt reverberate as well in my left ear :\

Oh yeah, didn't think of that. I always thought of tinnitus as being subjective, i.e. there is no actual sound source, but your explanation does make sense.

Wow and I thought I had it bad since I can't go swimming without water entering and clogging up my ear canals..
