I'm going to be buying a 20G iPod in the next 2 weeks, and I would like to get some new headphones as well. I really don't like earbuds, so I want something like an ear-cup, preferably closed-ended, but they don't have to be, because I want them to sound good. I would also like them to match in color -- white. I was thinking of spending around 150US too. I don't want to have to get an amp for the headphones either, but the volume part really depends on the player itself, and I like my music loud.. so if I have to, then I will. Hopefully someone has had the same problem as me, and can help me out in choosing.

I was looking at the Sennheiser HD200's at some sites, and those really grabbed my attention, although when I looked on the Sennheiser site www.sennheiserusa.com they didn't have that model there, so I'm assuming they're not in production anymore...anyone know?

And one more, any one know who makes these??

I'd say the headphones that look the best with the iPod are the D66 Eggos (but are not white). I don't often recommend them because with import they're overpriced, but sound is good and they're closed (though average with isolation).

I think that in your budget range, you won't need a headphone amp for an ipod (ipods put out a nice strong signal.) Of course, an amp would give you extra oomph!

i have to disagree about the iPod's power output...if you really like to listen at high volumes, i recommend a headphone amp, even a cheap one. even with canalphones like my ety-er4p, i sometimes find myself at full volume on some songs...

If you want to see some of stan23's photos of the pair, check them out here.

I wouldn't bother with an amp in this case. Depends if you want to carry around another item.

I can't get over 50% with my e1's either...

It's a shame you're ruling out in ear phones..the shure e3c's make a great match to the iPod...I'll be getting some myself soon

Those HD200's are still available in Europe, but are no longer distributed in North America.

Second, the headphones in that pic are just $20 USD Sony MDR-CD180's (which are the same as the MDR-P180's marketed in most other countries). Expect them to sound like the cheapo $30 CAN closed headphones that they really are - and they're still too big for easy portability.

I have the sony v6's. my rio karma powers them nicely at 2/3 volume. I think the ipod has pretty close to the karmas output so.....They would work. I got them at frys for 80 dollars and they sound awseome. eSespecially for rock.

Can the iPod even handle them?

Don't know if you can get them.. but the HD200 has a nominal impedance of 64ohms.. well within the realm of being drivable by the iPod.
