I'm debating picking up another pair of HD280 Pros to use with my D-EJ2000, as I had to take them back a month or so ago to finance Christmas gifts.

Would these do ok with the EJ2000 with no amp? I'm happily using the EJ2000 with Sportapros and MX300 & MX400's, and the impedance of the HD280's is about the same as the Sportas.

I'm really happy with the sound of the EJ2000, and with recent talk of re-appraisal of the HD280's (after serious burn in of 100-500 hours), I'm debating the purchase.

Any words of advice? I listen to alot of rock (Brand New, Vendetta Red, VAST, God Lives Undewater) and jazz (Miles) as well as some soul stuff (Jill Scott).

thanks,

The 280's sound good with portable CDP's and soundcards, they don't need an amp the way that Beyer's do, or even the 580's or 600's do.

Only problem with most portable devices (and all soundcards I know of) is they do volume control in the digital domain. This means that when the volume is at anything less than full blast, some of the information is being thrown away. That's why the little Xin Supermini or Supermicro is a very good upgrade to most portable devices or PC system - you can put the devices volume at full so that you get 100% resolution, and use the supermini for actual volume control.

But this is an issue that would be true for any headphone. Get the 280's (or any other good quality, easily driven phone) now, and in the future, instead of getting new cans for an upgrade, look at getting a nice little amp.

PS, I find the Sony's unlistenable also, for the same reason - pronounced harsh treble. The boosted mid-bass doesn't help either.
