Hey,
After researching and researching and reading this forum a bunch, I've managed to only confuse myself more.

I am looking for a good pair of closed cans that will both insulate me from the outside world and insulate my roommate from my music substantially. I will be listening to mostly rock and alternative, and also some podcasts and video games. I really don't have the trained ear of an 'audiophile,' but want something that will sound top notch for all these functions, especially music. Also, the headphones and their cable need to be durable. I don't want a pair that has a good chance of having the cord come apart or something like that. (Maybe stupid of me, but I tend to go to sleep with headphones on, and I feel that this may be something that puts quite a wear on them, especially the cords, when I move around in bed).

My price range is under $200 preferably, though I could move higher - maybe up to $100 more - if the headphones seem worthy. From what research I have done, I feel that will not be necessary, however.

I have found these options to look good, but can not find a way to differentiate one from the other, and this is where I really need help. If you guys could point me in the right direction from this bunch, or show me something that would do better than these, that would be much appreciated.

Audio-Technica ATH-M50
Denon D1100
DT 770 Pro
Sennheiser HD 280 Pro
Shure SRH440 or Shure 750DJ

Additionally, what would really put me over the top on a pair would be if they had an inline mic and audio controls for the iphone 4. I can't find a pair of comparable quality to the ones I've listed that has this, and have pretty much resigned myself to having to live without this functionality, but if anyone could show me something that meets my other specifications, and this one, that would be so perfect.

Thanks,

Adam

Why would a full-size headphone need a mic? It's intended for home use. 6,3mm plugs are standard which should already tell you not to use a phone as source (although the iPhone sounds very good). I can only think of the Klipsch Image One in your budget and the B&W P5 in your extended budget. But I will recommend neither one.

Wait, are those headphones that I have listed 6.3 mm plugs? And is that not what the iphone has? So does that mean that those headphones I listed wouldn't work with my iphone? Wayy confused now. Sorry, I'm pretty new and inexperienced with this.

But regardless, thanks for your reply.

And why would you not recommend the two you have listed? Are they bad sound quality for the price?

Wow, it would be super nice to be able to do that, but looks far too difficult for me. I have zero experience with that sort of project. But yeah, I may give that some thought, as well as purchasing a product that adds the mic/control functionality (Like this Griffin SmartTalk thing). So I know that there are workarounds, and that's why I'm first and foremost looking at getting the best care of cans regardless of this feature, as it seems to really limit the selection.

consider the Ultrasone DJ1s
pleasurable listening experience

a good alternative to those already in your list imo. i originally considered the 750djs and the srh840, but went with the sones for the sake of being indie
i have tried both the m50 and the dj1s and felt the m50s had heavier bass and weighed a fair bit more
i can definitely vouch for both

Sorry for the confusion. I think all of those you've listed come with a 6,3 mm adapter. They also work with the iPhone, but why would you want to wear those huge things outside? I wouldn't consider any of them portable, not even the Ultrasone.
That's why I don't think they need a mic.

The Klipsch Image One is horrible with the bass and the P5 sounds very smooth - too smooth.

You should check the portable headphones forum for iPhone controls and mic support. There are some nice options, especially IEMs like the PFE or SE215.

Hello Skullcandy Aviators. :)

Agree
Or the slightly more expensive skullcandy Roc Nation should give you better sound. More in-ears have what why you are looking for check out some Senn Mx or Cx don't know which or much about either but those should fit the bill.

I thought Aviators and this Roc Nation you speak of..  are the same things....

BTW i use Aiaiai Tracks for an ultraportable option. With inline mic. They're closed back, but have low isolation. But sounds amazing

No I'm pretty sure the Roc Nation are $150 and the aviators are $80.
