After reading some very good reviews for the Fii0 E7 headphone amp and DAC I decided it was worth buying some to improve the sound quality of my iPod.

To me, the sound quality when using the amp is almost identical to how it is without it. It does sound slightly better to me when I know that I'm using it but when tried I blind test I thought my iPod alone was better than my iPod with the DAC and amp!

I'm wondering what differences I should look out for in the sound when using the Fii0 E7. I'd like to be able to appreciate the improved sound quality.

I am using an iPod Classic 80g with a 30 pin ipod connector to the amp. I'm using Sennheiser HD595 headphones and my music was ripped at 256kbps.

Thanks for your help.

I don't think that you can use the DAC functionality of the E7 beause you need to use the usb input. I didn't notice a big sound change from the E7 when I got mine, but a lot of little improvements in the clarity. I would have guessed that the hd595 would have benefit from an amp based on the 50 ohms impedance.

The 595 is a pretty sensitive headphone so an amp won't make a huge difference.   You could try using the bass boost a little though, the HD595 could use just a little more bass IMO.

But the E7 isn't a really great amp to use portably.  If you want a good portable amp, something like the new E11 would be much better - the E7's strength lies in its USB DAC more than the amp, which is about average, really.

Like what DaBomb said, E7 is mainly a USB DAC and its amp is not as good. Connect it to your computer and the difference will be greater. Also, you'll hear more differences if you listen to E7 for a while, then disconnect it and then listen to the computer itself. You'll realize how bad the onboard sound card is :)

Thanks. I didn't know that the DAC only worked with a USB input! I had assumed that it would work through anything. So that's good to know thanks. My family have tried the amp and all seem to agree that it improves the sound quality slightly. I expect that the difference will become clearer once I've got used to the sound. I'll try to play music through my laptop as well.
