thank you everyone for your ideas.
i have been reluctant to EQ because i figure my chances of screwing up the sound are probably better than my chances of improving it...but fidelia does have several EQ plugins, so i'll give that a shot. thanks to those who provided specific frequency ranges to alter.
i'll also look at the beyers. the HD600 was my first and only set of audiophile cans...but i've been wanting to try a different phone for comparison. maybe this is it.
