I am in the research stage of buying my first CIEM. I have narrowed my list to the following (and I notice that many of you have owned / extensively demoed the below):

  1. JH Roxanne (JH’s poor customer service is concerning)
  2. JH Layla
  3. Noble K10
  4. SE 5-way Ultimate

I listen to a variety of music and my palate is slowly maturing. That said, I do enjoy my lows and bass. This purchase would be used purely for music enjoyment. Money is not a concern but I won’t be looking to change or upgrade anytime soon and this would be only high-end headphone (for now).

I am leaning toward the SE-5 Ult – any advice or feedback?

You input and advice is highly valued.

Get the SE5way Ulti and close the ciem book for a long while.

I haven't heard of JH Layla. So I can't give opinions on that.

For the other three, I have sold Roxanne and K10. So I guess that says something :)

Roxanne is IMO a technically better option than K10. But K10's sound signature is more balanced and easier on the ears.

SE5 way ultimate is on par with the other two with a more natural, realistic sounding. In contrast to SE5 ref, ult has more depth, and better instruments focus. But the overall brightness is similar, depending on the songs you choose, sometimes ult is brighter, sometimes REF is brighter. The lower end of ult is slightly more forward compared to ref, specially in the lower mid region (200- 1000 Hz). I still think ref offers a vocal presentation like nothing else, with the smoothness and liquidity. ult is great with vocals too, but it can get a little bit dry on the wrong source.

I realized you didn't want a comparison between ref and ult. :) But hope it helps too.

Haven't share this for a long time :p

I have never heard K10, I will sell my Roxannes because I cannot manage a good fit even after several reshells. The Roxanne sounds good, great size of soundstage and well controlled bass. The SE5 Ultimate is significantly better to me taste, the sound feels more natural, and layered. I don't know what it is with the Roxannes, can't really point it out. I tried the Layla briefly, seem good.

I am leaning towards the SE5 Ultimate but will need to make sure they will fit my ears. All of your feedback is very much appreciated. It is surprising how little publicity these amazing headphones get.

The pairing is superb! There is really not much more I can ask, specially on the balanced output!

Excuse my noobness, but are there balanced cables you can purchase for these or do you need to get them modded?

Also, by 'balanced output', do you guys just mean using a 'balanced cable'? Would this just go into a normal headphone jack or are you using certain gear?

Looking forward to ordering a pair of Ults!
