I gotcha...so you are using your Touch as a standalone device w/external HD attached vs. going into the computer to access anything, correct?  I don't think there are any advantages or disadvantages what way you go into the Touch, though I can see why the other things like LMS would be beneficial.  You can always use a BNC in place of the Touch's RCA much the same as using a BNC in place of your dac's RCA.

Touch is standalone with a dedicated server in my back room.  It's impossible to have my music near my stereo, I have close to 4TBs of music and that much storage is just too loud.

I think there might be advantages of using the Hiface2 over the existing SPDIF port for the reasons I mentioned, but you obviously disagree.  We'll leave it at that.

I am running triode's 192kb app via digital out to my dac.

anyone know if you can apply soundcheck's toolbox on top of this?  i'm sure TT has to be done last since triode's app changes the kernel out.

There are reports of it working either way.  TT before or after.

Where do you actually get the app from?  Cannot see it either on the forum or on Logitech's list of apps.

To install, please following the following steps:
1) Ensure your Squeezebox Touch is running 7.7.x or later firmware
2) Go to Apps Gallery -> 3rd Party Apps on the touch screen
3) Deselect the "recommended applets only" option, so that you see a longer list of apps
4) Select "Enhanced Digital Output" and select it for installation
5) Your touch should download the app, reboot, then download a new custom linux kernel and reboot again
6) You should now get a list of possible output devices - this should include "Digital Output" and your USB Dac if it is plugged in, select the appropriate output
7) Touch should reboot again and then be ready to start playing with the selected output

If you want to change the output go to Setting > Audio Settings > Digital Output; if you want to change some of the advanced options go to Settings > Advanced > Digital Output

Please note that if you perform a firmware update, then the app and kernel will need to be reinstalled, this should be automated just requiring you to install the app again or to have the "reinstall after update" option selected from the 3rd party apps list.

one problem i see is that if you set your squeezebox sever to decode flac to wav for streaming (to take that burden off the touch),
hi-rez has a problem since the touch can't stream 192kb/s WAV............apparently this will be fixed in 7.8 server

a question for everyone:
is anyone running digital out of the touch to a 're-clocker' then to a dac?  if so, how effective are these TT3.0 mods, since i assume their main impact is to reduce things that cause jitter in the stream........i currently run my touch into a tact 2.2xp room correction unit that also functions to re-clock the digital output going to my DAC, so i'm wondering if these mods, which many feel improves the sound, will make a difference for my setup.

Actually sending uncompressed wav has been proven to put more load on the Touch because of the extra network load than decoding FLAC.  It's been discussed in detail on the forums as well.

Just set your server back to sending flac.

My apologies for a disagreement prior, but my thought will always remain...whatever works, works.  One can argue the science against the subjective all day long or even attempt to speak about something we know little about scientifically speaking...but at the end of the day, it's what matters "subjectively" how something sounds to one's own ears.  I have not tried the path you have, but I may well like it just the same as you do or even more so:)!

Toolbox 4.0 is or should be out now?  I saw him post that he's using his USB route with the 4.0 version.

Cheers!

No apologies needed!

My thoughts are that an asynchronous USB device that has galvanized isolation and and a quality reclock would solve all the supposed issues that TT tries to solve/reduce.

Anyway I ordered one today.  If it does nothing I'll use it elsewhere.

Good way to put it.  I would experiment with a nice power supply on the USB device.  I think there's some solid benefits to be gained so long as you keep it simple and do not overpay or even diy something just as good as the offerings available.
