Lost one of my earpieces due to a bad cable on my RE0s today. Fascinating, it opened my mind to the possibility of Re-Cabling my RE0s with better cables.Previously i was thinking of recabling them with the Creative EP630 cables (Super Durable is what i feel about them, coz i've been using them for over an ear, and they have been treated pretty badly too), and right now, i realised i can also have all those Fancy custom UE cables also.
my questions:
i) has anybody recabled their RE0s before?
ii)if yes then has anybody even used the UE custom cables on their RE0s?

does changing the cables in any way improve the sonic abilities or the SQ of any IEM? even if not, i'd totally love a fancy looking RE0 pair.hehe.

nobody?

If I had the skills to recable I would. I had the left side of my RE0 split in two parts. All I did when this happened was glue the parts together. If you are handy with the soldering gun you can easily do it. Unfortunately I won't be doing so, but I think it's a great idea.

i mite be going for a recabling the next time my cable breaks, with the new RE0 i am going to have as the replacement.i now feel it broke because of my using it over the ear.they certainly arent goot for moving alot either.was looking at the weststone cables (http://www.westone.com/catalog/elite-series-monitor-replacement-cables) i guess they'd fit in right.i guess its just going to be a 2 step process:
i)chop off the plugs that go into the IEM
ii)solder them onto the RE0s, but the wire size needs to be close enough to get into the RE0 strain reliefs.
after this i dont think atleast the cables would die again

Both sides of my re0's cable broke. I am also interested in recabling as well, however, I don't solder very well. I am thinking about asking my buddy to help me out. Please do document your progress & experiment.

Thanx!

@lisztian, check out http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum/showthread.php?t=24771
i dont yet have my replacement pair, so i am not carrying on with the recabling yet.but, i have a pair of Creative EP630s that i dont use, and i bet that the cable from the EP630s can be put into the RE0s without much hassle.otherwise, order the Weststone cable i linked in my post, cut the jacks at the ends where they enter the Earphones, open the RE0s up, remove the broken ones and solder the new ones.we just have to take care that the cable that we are going to use, should be of a size that lets it enter RE0's strain relief.as stated above, i feel u can go with the creative EP630s cable (very durable, have been using my EP630s for 2 years now, and have been wearing them to the Gym).the problem would be opening the RE0s up.dont use alot of any liquid, coz it might enter the RE0s and damage the RE0 driver.
where do u live? i might be able to help.

Hi Pasgarcha92,

I am now located in Taiwan. I will probably use the Westone cable because I think it's durable, soft, comfortable, no microphonics, long and I happen to have 3 lying around at home.

The question is, how do I open up the shell of the headphones. Should I use a heat gun?

I am a big fan of the RE0, and I can only imagine the SQ improving by switching to the custom Westone cable. I tried that with the UE Superfis before, and it worked great.

So are you saying that I should cut off the plastic part with the two pins sticking out connecting to the customs?

I also don't know how to solder the right wires to the drivers. I remember having the trouble of wrong phase out, and the superfi sounded distant and really strange. Do you know how that could be done?

Thanx for your ardent help!

Hey lisztian,
i dont understand why the sound would be distant until u did not solder it well enough.
yup, u totally got it right, just chop off the two plugs that go into the custom IEMs they were supposed to, get the wires naked,
and opening the RE0s can be tricky.there is a lot of chance of damaging them.what i think should do the job is a little bit of thinner, the nail polish remover women use, be cautious, a big amount will probably remove us RE0's coil from the driver.we have to use the minimal amount, so that it just gets between the head and the bottom of the RE0's chassis.
i dont know if heat gun would work, but u may try, dont heat it too much.if this works. or maybe use an hair dryer, that'll be less lethal to the Drivers inside the RE0s.
i do think a little amount of thinner (very little amount) would do good in opening up ur IEMs.please dont use alot of thinner, i'd feel bad if u destroy ur RE0s.
and do consider the EP630 cable too.

I opened the chasis by twisting it over with a wrench. Anyways,.. I got it recabled. The effect is very interesting. I can safely say that the es cable are of great quality. It's soft, no mirophonics, and the SQ changed a bit. I have to listen more to decide if it is an improvement but this is my quick impression.

Bass is a little tighter and more present. The high is more crisp and the sound stage sounds wider. Now,... all this is based on memory, so I could be very wrong. Oh well,.. at least the comfort is excellent! So guys,.. if you get a chance, try this!!

How do they look now?
awesome?care to click a pic and post it here?
was the wire of good size to get into the RE0's strain relief easily?
please post some pics.
changed my RE0s for RE-ZEROs, missing RE0s right now.the Highs are more impressive on the RE0s.but whats done is done, i can live with it.
save the weststone cables ok?

Definitely will save the Westone cables. I only spent 10 bucks for recabling as I did it in a premium cable store. The size is a little tricky for strain relief. They have to take off the two rubber strain relief pieces off and they placed a little piece of rubber and tied the two small wires up for strain relief. So the nice store owner did a great job, and she used some decent quality silver solder. The whole process took her 10 mins. She's that good: ) Why did you go with the REzeros? For better bass? The bass is still relatively light compare to my customs. But for the total cost of $140 bucks, I am super happy with them right now. Again,.. the electric guitars sounds pretty sweet, the treble and the details are just fantastic. However,.. light bass. But better than the original cable because I am happy enough with the bass to not even bother to boost the bass with rockbox.

Pictures coming later... Monday as I am having a hard time finding a camera now, and I am super busy on the weekends. Sorry for the tease, the picture should be the easiest imaginable part: p

I dunno why i went for the ZEROs.
actually after breaking the cable, i talked to my dealer and he said he doesnt have another RE0 for replacement, but he does have one RE-ZERO left.i have to leave town on 22nd this month, so i dont think i had a better choice.letting them burn in right now, but definitely missing the highs of the RE0s.might sell these off and buy the RE0s if i dont like it in a few days.lets see.

so do they look good to u? apparently there was another post here on the forums about a Parent asking about broken RE0s and what to get inplace of them, i said recable them, the guy hasnt replied yet.how much did the west stone cables cost u?

I got them over here in Taipei. $1800 for it here.( about $58 usd. ) Too expensive here. Look else where.

Psgarcha I appreciate your advice. Respect!

Get the cables in the States. I think you can get that for $30~

Westone has the most comfortable cables.

On the site they say $39.99 for 48" of the cable, ring-the-NRI-relative time.hehe
thanks man! Glad i could help :)
i dunno what to do about my not liking the ZEROs so-much rite now.
Post  some pics please... :)
