Thanks!

Good or bad depends on what you want in your custom IEM

x2  Although I wonder if recessed is better than the UE style long term?  Probably not.

Hmm, I dunno. Recessed could possibly be a bit stronger, maybe? The new UE's arent recessed, just right angled. Which looks like it would alleviate some stress on the connectors I think. I'm just goin by aesthetics right now and they look really good.

Oh and i havent a clue what I want in a custom yet...sigh.

Forgive me for not being fully across this, but what exactly is the advantage of the UE cable and how is it different to "normal" stock cables? From the pictures note the molded right angled connector but I feel like I'm missing something... :S

The connectors on the new UE cable are recessed/female.  So the shell has a 'key' that locks into the connector.  It's really solid and I feel no problem torquing on them.  You'll never break your pins either and since they are mostly shielded by the connector and they will likely never bend from exposure when separated from shell for whatever reason.  Plus the braid on the cable is great as AJ said.

I would get a regular custom over something pieced together as you never know what you will get when you put them together.  It could be great or it could be horrible (not that buying an unknown custom IEM can't be the same).  I also think both universals mentioned, when compared with customs pale in comparison in the bass region.

Makes me wonder just how intense the bass of the JH16 actually is, in rock music do the drums really stand out, more than they would in a live concert?

Edit: For the record, I know of at least one person with something like a dozen custom IEM's, that still rates a universal very highly... http://www.head-fi.org/t/561609/review-sleek-audio-ct7-custom-earphone-review-masterless-sound#post_7590470

I realise the ck10 will be very shy of JH16 bass, it's just a sound signature experiment - if I go ahead with it (which is iffy), at least reshelling is a fairly inexpensive venture and acheiviing something different, I know people reshell their favorite IEM's and add drivers and such sometimes, it's not uncommon from what I can see.

I am still listening to various genres, but in general, yes, the JH16 bass is enhanced. Some tracks can seem very enhanced while others not so much.  I will say the JH16 is capable of delivering a lot of pounding, reverberant deep bass and have fast and punchy bass.

@average_joe, if a custom comes with westone/JHA compatable pin connectors, will there be any issue with aftermarket cables if I get the sockets recessed? Are there any downsides to recessed sockets?

Hi average_joe,

May I ask what universals come close to the customs in the bass region?

Thanks.

HI average_joe, just wondering if you have heard a custom that has the three SS: the bass of MDR7550 or EX1000, the midrange of EM3Pro or Mi-3 and the treble of DBA-02? That's assuming you've heard all three (not sure if you've heard the DBA-02).
TIA!

edit: I'm looking for a cheap alternative to these cables :p
With Whiplash Elite TWag v2 OM Cable: The Whiplash Elite TWag V2 cable improves the EM3 Pro in many ways including a wider and more precise presentation of space to taming the mid-bass just the right amount which increases the clarity and results in a faster sound when called for.  I really didn't care for the paring of the Clip+ and the EM3 Pro with the stock cable, but with the Elite, that has changed and the Clip+ has never sounded better!  The cable makes the most difference with tracks that have a large presentation of space, are warm, complex passages, and/or have a fast attack.  The cable makes very little to no difference with smaller presentations, simple passages, and/or lean sounding tracks.
