Ahh.. Pictures would be helpful, yes?

I currently don't own a digital camera but I do have a scanner.

The original (higher quality) versions of these images are available at here.

Why are there numbers written on the earcups?

And the use of the yellow glue seems to be weird and harshly done too... My Music Series Pro doesn't have it and the glue isn't spilled over onto the earcups...

My new RS-1 has the same yellow glue, and the number 453 written in the same locations. The sound of these headphones is magnificent. I alternate them with the K1000. Also, just ordered the HD650.

I have no idea. Seems very unprofessional to me, especially on a $700 "flagship" product. I'm hoping to hear from other RS-1 owners regarding these pictures.

I feel for you reality...

I really think there shouldn't be anything or numbers such like that written on the earcups. I mean, how can a dealer handly write anything on a customer's new merchandise? It just feels like a possibly used or refurbished pair. And the yellow glue is not supposed to spilled out onto the earcup parts either.

The glue and numbers are covered by the ear cups, and therefore not visible. I purchased mine from HeadRoom Corp.

Wow there is a lot of glue on that, I have the number (#5) on my RS-2 which also matches the number on the box but with less glue. Some pictures

Numbers could probably help in the manufacturing stage eg. grain or colour matching but I don't see the point of writing it twice...

To be honest if my Alessandro have had anything written on them I would've really got pissed off and maybe wouldn't have bought them in the first place...

That glue job is crazy. I can't believe they let that get past them. If I were you I'd call them and ask them to replace them with a new, non-written on and cleaner pair.

i think Grado started numbering recently, probably sometime in 2003? I remember John Grado mentioned to me that they get their wooden chambers from a supplier so numbering would probably help in matching the pairs of chambers. In fact, I didn't realise the numbers were there at all, until I removed the earpads to do some cleaning. The numbers and the glue job are fine on my pair but the RS1 definitely had too much glue...

I'm sorry, but why do all of you care?

It's most likely for warranty information, so grado can accurately track the age and use of the headphones. It's not like john grado just releases a swarm of toddlers into grado labs to start writing on headphones.

Stickers could easily fall off, or be exchanged between owners, perhaps looking to cheat some system that grado has established.

What's next? People protesting etymotic research for printing serial numbers on headphones?

Ebonyks,

The glue in that first picture of
Realityclouded's really looks badly applied. The numbers aren't that bad as they are hidden under the pad.
