and if i get the xb500, do i need alot of eq?

edit:
ehh nvm, after reading some reviews the xb500 seem quite bad besides the bass (i love the ear cushions)

You do not need to eq them at all, you could try Bass boost with them I guess if you want extra bass no matter what, but they sound amazing without, especially when you realise they surpass the beats for less than half the price.

580's might also be good for you, since you like Bass alot, but they aren't built to last like the M50's are, so if you plan on just throwing them in your bag or something, I'd go for the M50's.

Actually XB500 when bass is put aside isn't that bad, I love mine even if bass is EQ'd out but it doesn't suit every1 because it's very warm and forward sounding and some like it and others doesn't. I thought M50 had too little bass for my liking and there was a bit too much sibilance present but I seem to have quite sensitive ears. You can read the D1100 vs XB500 review (check signature) to get a more detailed description of XB500.

reading reviews on the hfi-580, a few said they were uncomfortable when wearing them for a long time. Will the m50's do the same, because if i want to wear them on a 7 hour plane ride, i do not want to have to take them off like halfway. btw: my ears are 2.25-2.6, probably on the bigger side.

also, how are the ATH-PRO700's ?

second edit: reviews say they are uncomfortable, so i guess ill just buy the m50's

Dude if you want as much bass as the beats or even close, then throw the M50's out. Phiaton MS400, V Moda Crossfade, Denon 1100, HFI-580, and probably a couple others I am forgetting, all have more bass than the M50. If bass isn't that big to you then the m50's will be great in every other way.

comfort + bass = DT770 Pro 80

I cannot comment on the m50s yet (mine arrive tomorrow), though I listen to every beats on display at best buy every time i go just to see if they're as bad as last time... they're terrible. The only ones I can kind of listen to are the newest, and most expensive, pros. They have a great aluminum design and the Fq curve isn't as ridiculous as the others, but they still have no detail at all.

My girlfriends xb500s arrive today, amazingly warm when I auditioned at best buy, and the pads are the most comfortable things I've ever put around my ears. So comfy in fact, that my girlfriend just got an industrial cartilage piercing like 3 days ago and had zero issues wearing them! At only 50 bucks I can't not recommend them for a bass head as an alternative to beats.

I use my M50 primarily for transcribing music, so clarity of sounds is a must, and I am very happy with it. Every instrument can be heard, even on music with crappy quality ripped from Youtube. The highs are not piercing and the bass is tight but won't blow your head off, might not be a thing for bassheads though. EQ is not required, I listen to them on flat settings all the time.

Highly recommended if you are looking for sound clarity.

i've only tried the beats in passing at the apple store, they were relatively comfortable. i own the m50s and i can confidently say that they're extremely comfortable even after long periods of use.

If you could get them for the same price, I would go with the Beats; however, if you're going to have to spend $200-$300 on the Beats, you could get something better for the money. I would think about looking into the Denon D2000's also. They can be had in the low $200 range.

I agree with this, you might be able to get some perfectly fine refurb's on the monster site. The beats actually do have pretty good sound if you like bass, just not $300 sound.

Maybe if that price was free. The bass is crap...there's just a lot of it.

^ Well that's really what alot of people look for in headphones when they first start. I know I did.

After a while of trying different headphones and listening to more than just bass, you'll realize they may be lacking, and will want something different; however, if bass is what makes him happy right now, then I say go for it. It wasn't until I got my hands on a set of Grados that I started to enjoy things in music other than bass. That was pretty much the turning point where I started to really enjoy mids and highs, which are usually overlooked when people first start getting into this hobby.

Still doesn't make ANY sense going for Beats if only caring about getting bass, then XB500 would make so much more sense at $50 which deliver both more and better quality.
