I've listened to PFE111, 232, W4 and UM-3ways today on one track from IMP-550 and I have to say comparing to 111 232's sound is ...brutal. It's simply violent, but I kinda like it. 232 is the most bassy in this company and has the most accentuated trebles.

hhmm... I think I'll have to personally hear it for myself... I had the original PFE a while back when they first launched.. but that was a very long time ago, i forgot how they sound... anyways it seems like PFE is getting some mixed reception... hhmm..

I'm sensitive to harsh treble and especially sibilance, I dislike phones like the CK10, B2, etc. Only thing I can say is that the PFE232 have the best treble I ever heard in an IEM.
Maybe I should elaborate a bit more on that. I find the 232's treble to be the best I heard so far because it is the most realistic, next to being the most precise one, and it's pretty much non-fatiguing to my ears, despite me usually being a fan of toned down treble (SM3, HD650, TMA-1, IE8, etc). With the 232 triangles sound like triangles, not sine waves with added white noise; high piano notes sound like piano, not harpsichord; cymbals sound like cymbals, not like some kid banging on their mother's baking trays. Maybe some people have forgotten what live music sounds like, but the 232's treble is pretty close to the real deal. It's maybe a bit bright and it took me some time getting used to this - for me - unaccustomed signature, but yeah, now the 232 spoiled pretty much all other IEMs for me...

I have to agree on the "live music" thing. That was one of my thought today. They sound really live-like with all the advantages and disadvantages of that statement.
Audeo's trebles put to shame some good headphones in terems of its border response.
To me trebles are not bright they are edgy. Though I can believe that one will find this fatiguing.

Treble seems to be an area where people's perception of the sound differs more than in other regions - perhaps due to differences in ear canal shapes and resulting resonances. Some people find a spike at 4kHz painful, others at 6kHz, and so on.
I remember reading in one of the EX1000 threads that some people perceive them as having a very unpleasant spike in the treble - whereas I and James444 both find they have a very nicely balanced treble with no fatiguing spike... I guess treble is one aspect where one size doesn't fit all.

Same of tips. Certain IEMs have very synergistic tips. If you happen on the right tips or the supplied ones are right and you can use them, all's good. At the same time, a revealing IEM will not like poor sources or alternate matching. The up side is how much music there is to be had when it falls into place. I'd think the the supplied complys would tame things a bit for those that need it. They were fine with the 112 even though the stock silicon was preferred. Tips have always made me wary as these penny worth or silicon can make or break a $500 IEM.

Yes James, I only kept the W4... I had to spend some time with them to really convince myself but despite that, I love it's bass and medium...soundstage, dynamics and depth but the treble energy is to my ears to tiring when listening to it for long listening sessions...and the fact that the silicone tips don't enter enough into my earcanals and tend to go out...

I'm in the very same boat as both you and james, as I didn't find the EX1000's high end the least bit fatiguing. Hence I'm inclined to believe that I would come to appreciate the PFE232's high end no less than you, my friend. In the event the IE80 doesn't appeal to me, rest assured, the PFE232 will surely take it's place.

(Off topic: Listening to the IE80 right now... a very, very, very subtle difference to the IE8, but slightly to the better. I just don't understand why they had to make them so ugly, with the cheesy aluminum face plate. Cable isn't exactly as good as the IE8's either.)

Is the infamous midbass hump (shown below) still present, or is that too a subtle improvement at best? That'd make the biggest difference for me.

I think that if you open up the bass vent all the way, the bass is more almost flat below 100hz so instead of a mid bass bump it simply has too much bass in general depending on ones point of view. (mine, LOL) That looks like the minimum bass position if I recall correctly.

That what I was talking about. For me - long time PFE 111 listener - 232's trebles are simply extended and edgy but still non-bothering. But I can imagine some of 232 would find this type of extension unbearable.

x2 please don't derail.
@dfkt try putting old 111 grey filters on 232. To my ears result is quite surprising. Want to read your thoughts about it.

I'd have thought all the same color and size filters the same so as to not cause confusion. Is it possible that your old ones aren't as clean?
