Sony EX1000 Review and Impressions Thread (with comparisons to FX700, GR10 and e-Q5)

Sad to admit, the more I hear them (ex1000) the less I like them.

Sibilance is killing me. These are most sibilant phones I heard so far, period. There is a huge peak around 7KHz. I've seen it on the graph, and this is exactly what I hear. My ER4P sound way smoother in this region, and they are known to be harsh here.

And in general, amount of treble energy these produce is just not adequate. K701 are dark phones compared to these.

Something is wrong here... Any ideas?

I'm seriously wondering if my apple daps are a little bass light. Even the W4's bass was much stronger out of the macbook pro than on the iPhone 4 or nano. I've got a clip+ coming and I plan on trying the new Fiio dap.

And yes the Atrios do have boosted sub bass.

I haven't heard any sibilance or treble spikes. It's been pretty smooth. Do you have the Japanese cable with 2 parts or the American version that is one long cable? Anaxilus reported a big difference between the 2 cables. I myself have never tested differences in cables, so I don't know. I can say my Sony's are very airy and have great extension but not fatiguing or sibilant. However I can say I seem to have a higher tolerance as some found the Tf10's and panasonic hje900's fatiguing but I enjoyed their treble. The Panasonics were close to my limit though.

Edit: also I have read, that in general, poor fit can cause sibilance. Not sure if that is your issue though.

The Japanese version isn't two-part, you get one long cable plus a short one for use with remote adapters.

I hope James444 will lend me both phones again, with both cables... ROFL.

You'd like that, wouldn't you? Thankfully my EX1000 are on their loaner tour and out of reach...

I got it in EU. Just normal cable, one part, and another one spare in the package. I have absolutely no problem with TF10's treble, as well as with ER4P's and k701.

Just a reminder that the 'Japanese' & 'European' EX1000 cables are the same and, actually, made in China. Perhaps Anaxilus in the end - having so much gear - got mixed up and it was the other way round, ie the real EX1000 cable sounds better than the (cheaper & thinner) EX600 cable used on the US version of the EX1000s?    Anyway, I really don't think either cable makes a difference in SQ (I've had both, though not at the same time).

I think those who have treble issues with the EX1000s is either due to a poor fit or just plain dislike of the Sony's sound sig. The treble is definitely brighter than on the W4, UM3X, CK100, SE530, SM3, UM2 & IE8.

I did say in my initial impressions (comparing the W4 with the EX1000 loaner I had with a 'Japanese' cable) that the treble reminded me of the TF10, which I liked a lot, in fact possibly my favourite treble-wise before I got the EX1000s. Some consider the TF10's treble too bright, but many have reported having (serious) fit issues with it (not my case, BTW).

The EX1000 is no UM3X or UM2 when it comes to fit, ie many will agree the UM3X & UM2 are possibly the best in that regard. It's still early days to determine whether many people will report having fit issues with the EX1000/600/800. I've found the EX1000s more comfy, even, than the TF10, and on par (in my case) with the UM3X, UM2 & W4, the 3 most comfortable universals I'd tried.

I didn't hear any in the second (King Crimson) track but on the first track I heard a lot.  However I also heard it on all my other phones too.  It was least pronounced on the W4's, which makes sense, since they have the most laid back treble of the 3 I tried it on but I could still detect it, even if less bothersome.

I have my doubts about cables sounding different but since I've never tested it for myself, I didn't want to rule anything out.

I agree on the Sony's treble sounding similar to the UE TF10 treble.  I really like that airy feel to it.

I have Indoor Games both on CD & 192kbps (VBR, AAC file). Even the 192 file sounds better than the YouTube link you posted, which doesn't sound all that bad, but vocals don't sound quite right, either. The 192 file I have sounds perfectly fine with the EX1000s with no hint (to these ears) of sibilance. I prefer this song with the EX1000s over my custom ES3X.

Karmacoma does sound quite sibilant with the EX1000s, but all I can say is I think it is more the result of how the vocals were recorded because the rest of the instruments that produce higher frequencies sound fine, not bright or piercing at all. With my ES3X, which is a more 'forgiving'/warmer phone than the EX1000, sibilance is a lot less apparent and it sounds almost fine, yes, but at the expense of losing a bit on upper mids & treble quality & detail retrieval with other instruments. With this particular song I prefer my custom ES3X. Perhaps you also prefer this warmer type of sound presentation. I definitely would if most of my music sounded like this, but it doesn't.
