Sennheiser HD 600 Impressions Thread

I keep seeing so many people rave about the HD600 all over the internet. Any point to buying one if you already own an HD800?

I will say this, I'm currently enjoying the HD600 more than I enjoy the HD800! They are new and on a different day it might of been different but they just seem to fit my taste perfectly . I'm very impressed with them.

I

It's hard to describe really. Even though the Hd800 is better in every way when I analyse them , the HD600 just has a more forgiving natural sound that is so satisfying. It's like I stop noticing the technicalities and just enjoy the music more . I must add I do like a touch of warmth so it suits my taste better than the Hd800 so that helps . All that said the Hd800 is a better headphone if you want a clean transparent window into the music , warts and all.

I just purchased the HD 800 and can tell you that the HD 600 is still extremely impressive. One is warm and slightly laid back where the other is extremely neutral and transparent. I'll be keeping both, but it think if you already have the HD 800, the HD 650 would make an even more complimentary can because it's a fair bit more warmer and laid back. Still, the HD 600 is one of the greatest.

Or in my case, the response curve on worn out earpads - new earpads on my HD600 and I get a lot less reasons to compare it against an HD800 (and I have no idea what that sounds like on worn pads, which are also more expensive).

If you've just put some new pads on I would bend the metal part of the headband outwards a little. This relieves the pressure and keeps the pads from getting squashed over time. I went through numerous pads till I discovered this. Keeps the soundstage more open too.

The HD800 pads are very thin to begin with so I don't think that wear affects the sound any. I have read that the metal part can start to touch your face when they do squash though.

post #25 of 28 Why are so many people against equalization? That thread has all of the above.

I am still anxiously awaiting my HD 600s, but in the meanwhile I am wondering what you all think of the above? I been reading this thread a lot and haven’t seen anything about replacing earpads frequently or at all. And I do not know if any of you subscribe to “bend the metal part of the headband outwards a little” so do you?

Well the problem with EQ is it can make things sound better.
This in turn makes it far less justifiable for me to spend more money on gear to make things sound better

I will say though,

When I listen to a quality recording production I often prefer to hear what's really there.
Good recording production often involves using EQ (and other tonal modifications) in a musical way.
This sort of detail can be masked with EQ on the listening end.

What about the allegation in my quote above that HD 600s aren’t at their best when the earpads get old? And that also bending the metal part of HD 600s out a little would will make the earpads last longer an improved the soundstage?

Well I've only had the hd 600 for a couple months but I had the hd 650 for several years.
I think the pads sounded fine after a couple years.

Personally I'm not into "bending" expensive gear beyond it's intended physical shape.
Ear pads are cheap enough to not risk snapping my headphones...

I would have thought that the pads would be less critical on an open back design. It's not as if the 600's rely on a seal AFAIK. I could be wrong. Often am!
