I auditioned the SRH-1840 straight out of the box, and was unsatisfied with the sound, so I decided to give them a period of break-in. Recent scientific studies have shown definite differences...
I didn't think of TEAC when I began searching for a dedicated CD player. My initial short list included Denon, Cambridge, Marantz, Onkyo. The Teac intrigued me, so I went for it. It is very...
Sennheiser HD-598s are the most comfortable headphones I've had the opportunity to use. I recommend these wholeheartedly for any first-time hi-fi buyer because of their excellent soundstage and...
I just received my SigPros (bought from a fellow head-fi'er), and now have several hours with them. They are great headphones. Agree with most of what everyone's saying about them. These...
That's unfortunate, as this was a common issue with HD 5x5 series. One would have thought that Sennheiser would have fixed this issue with the new HD 5x8 series, I quess not. Anyway, to answer your question- your headphones will be fine as long as the crack doesn't expand past the point that causes the actual cup to fall off. That process takes several months to years depending on how roughly you handle your 'phones. If not you can always contact Sennheiser to have your 'phones repaired.
My HD558 don't have this problem, but I've seen several HD598s that do. Too bad, really, that Senn didn't put more effort into fixing this issue. You can try inserting some clear nail polish/acrylic into the cracks or over them; I think I read that it helps somewhat.
The HD 650's are quite solid but the build quality of lower level Senns need to be improved. . . my HD 485's were cheap so it's not a big deal for me but they are cracked. I just taped it up.
Neither the HD 448 (similar construction). Well at least now i know for sure i won't spend the money on HD 598, though i liked the color. Will it be HD 558 or something else.
I have had the same exact issue with my HD 598s. I picked them up when I was in Germany in December and a few weeks ago a crack began to form in the exact location as the posted picture. I left a message with Sennheiser a few weeks ago and did not get a response. I emailed them again this morning. I hope the 2 year warranty covers this issue. To bad, I am enjoying these cans so far.

Not really, the HD650's feel pretty fragile to me.
