What have you read saying they're different? FWIR they sound pretty similar.
A post here seems to shy away from the A700xs, but they refer the to closed set vs the open. It seems the open ones are farther from my budget then the closed.

It sounds like you trying to rule out any headphone that "requires" an amp. All headphones are going to benefit from a better amp, but the high ohm or low sensitivity ones are the ones that really need one to sound good. They just don't get enough volume without one. No headphones under 100 are going to be that critical of amping. The HD558 and the Superlux are both around 50 ohms so they will benefit slightly more from an amp, but it's not an issue like it is with 300 ohm mid fi headphones or the low sensitivity AKGs or Planar phones. AD700s are notorious for being extremely easy to drive. Don't know about the Samsons, but they're 32 ohms so they should be pretty easy.
In this price bracket, I wouldn't let any amp requirements affect your decision.
Well the problem is my budget doesn't take into consideration an amp so if I wouldn't need one it would be beneficial. To at least not need one right away would work to so I could save up for one.
That's simple: The DSS has a Dolby Digital "DD" light on it. If the "DD" light IS lit up, then it is working correctly. Anything else (like the "PLIIX" light) means the DSS is NOT getting the required Dolby Digital 5.1 signal, and therefore won't be able to produce surround sound. If the "Dolby Bypass" light is ON, then push the bypass button and see if it jumps over to "DD" or "PLIIX".
DOH! My current setup defaults to PLIIX guess that soundbox isn't doing its job? Is it because the sound is coming via USB to the box and then optical to the DSS? What would you recommend I do in this situation? (Having the DSS already which is apparently good)
