I have to second ...and the Circus Leaves Town, and not just because I idolize KR..., but because Kyuss rocks!

Going "old school" -- Golden Earring's Moontan is a rock classic, a must have, in my book. Recently got remastered on import, haven't heard the remaster yet.

Going more recent, Black Heart Procession have been traversing my CD players a lot, recently. anything by them.

Halou - Wiser -- is trip-hoppity.

Legendary Pink Dots - Hallway of the Gods -- trippy, psychedelic, creative, quirky, brilliant, jammy...lead singer has a bit of an affectation, but it's easier to get used to than, say, Geddy Lee from Rush or Dani from Cradle of Filth.

Milla - The Divine Comedy -- I dunno, just needed another girl in there.

Rupert Hine - The Wildest Wish to Fly -- actually anything by him. A little 80's, but definitely a little bit more interesting than most of today's pop drivel.

Meh, that's enough for now. Check these out and get back to me with opinions so that I can fine-tune my suggestions.

Dave's True Story - "Sex Without Bodies", on Chesky records.

I've been playing it a lot for the past days.
Great music, sexy, sweet vocals, good lyrics (consider that a bonus) and excellent sound with headphones, very involving and spacial. Sounds amazing with the CD3000.

In fact, it quickly raised to the top places on my 700 (?) CD list and became one of my favourite CDs... for music and headphones sound quality.

Read my post at the Music forum if you want to....erhm... get to know a few tracks better. Hmm.

Recently I have had good luck finding new music at All Music Guide and Soundstage on the internet. Look up some of the stuff you already like at All Music Guide by artist or album and see if you agree with their reviewers' opinions. Most entries suggest other works by the same artists and then other artists similarly reviewed. On Soundstage, check out the "busting out our best" section (love the graphic!) for the last couple of years; these are the records Soundstage's reviewers consider the best of all times. I already had enough of these selections to go back through my copies and find out I had similar tastes. In this way, I got direction to half a dozen new choices. Good luck!

For something different check out the Wishmaster cd by Nightwish, amazing combining metal with operatic style (female) vocals :- www.nightwish.com for more details.

Also I'm with Braver, check out Arena, Pendragon and also Mostly autumn which has a slightly more folky feel to it, start with "spirit of autumn past"or "The Last Bright Light" from mostly autumn

I also forgot one more:

Scott Weiland: 12 bar blues

Lead man from Stone Temple Pilots solo album, sounds NOTHING like STP, very weird and dark, sounds great too.

One cannot go wrong with Patricia Barber "Modern Cool"
I believe one of our members, MikeJazz, does some incredible work with this band and it covers many different genre/types of music.
I'd also point out Blodwyn Pig "Ahead Rings Out" on
vinyl - whatever that is.

Anything by Kyuss, Hum, Queens of the Stone Age, and Nebula is good. ahhhhhhhhhhh that fuzz guitar! really cleans out the neural network.

I haven't taken the time to read all suggestions posted, but here are 2 from the alternative camp...

Coldplay is great, mellow stuff...

My most recent purchase is The Strokes, and I really dig them. The recording is a bit flat in sonic terms, but the music is so baisc and uncluttered that it's a real pleasure to listen into the mix and hear what everybody's doing. i hear influences like Lou Reed, Televison, the Cars, and a bit of the Replacements. I don't know of any other band playing this kind of garage rock currently.

have Fun!!!

and NO OVERCOMPRESSION!

Sorry, can't help you. Current producer/engineers have ruined rock /pop music the way McDonalds has ruined the hamburger.

The Satriani "Engines of Creation" is compressed to hell.

I'd suggest Steely Dans "Two Against Nature"

Oh very true, some of the independent labels have some very fine natural non-compressed recordings which are also available on vinyl. Some still do care.
