Nice find! Just wish I had the funds to get these instead of the D2000's....

How much better are these than the 2000's?

Very slight differences the main ones being the different cable and the wood cups. I heard someone say they have a piece inside that has more holes or something but the difference isn't worth twice the price.

amazon always have it around that price, well at least the last 2-3 months that I have seen.

I just listened to these next to the 2000's at local audio store. The difference was great imo. Both coming out of the same multi-port SS amp playing the same song at same time, the 5000's sounded amazing to me. I asked the sales guy who seemed pretty honest and he said they both had months of burn in time. To my newbie ears, clearly worth the streatch over all the others I listened too. I listened back and forth for about one hour. It wasnt even close. I just bought the Amazon deal for the DT 990's and while they are fun, I really want the D5k's.

What the whole experience really taught me is that when you are about to buy some expensive headphones, you really should try to get a listen to them. I went into that store just for the heck of it with no expectations and came out with some very strong personal feelings that did not go with my impressions based on just reading about headphones. (They had some grados and the 650 on the same amp.)

How "wasn't even close" are we talking here? May I remind you that the D2000 and D5000 are exactly the same in every single way except one is wood and the other is not.  I believe the cups are also the same dimensions (correct me if I'm wrong).  So what you're saying is that the mere texture of the wood changes everything considerably.

Is that what you're saying?

Um, no. I was only comparing the sound that was coming out of them. I am no expert. In fact, just the opposite. There was clear SQ superiority coming from the A5k. I wish it wasnt this way. Im wanted to like the 2000s. I wanted to love the grado 60 they were $79 (they were very nice). Im just saying to my ears over an hour period of switching back and forth picking 10 different songs and controling the volume from the same amp, ect. I was shocked at how good the sound was comparred to the other six headphones there. I came home a checked to see if there were impedience issues. Both were the same. I'm as confused as anyone, I really expected them to be similar. On that day, they were not.

Here's what I also want to say. This was just one experience (though a rather long one) and scientifically, this should be viewed as such.

Also. I have absoultly no experience listening to different high quality headphones (save my 990's). My comments should also reflect this fact.

I really wish someone else could do a test similar to this (side by side) and refute the impressions I got.

I, too, am saving my pennies now and the A2K's are alot less of them than the A5K's.

But for sure I'm heading back to that store to give another listen.

Thank you for your clarification.  I've been interested in the D-5000 more because I just recently discovered how good the D-2000 sounds.  I think I'll give them a try based on your findings.

I bet that sucker doesn't come with a case does it?  Those cheap bastards.

The only other thing I can think is that "ListenUp Audio" is an extream high end speaker store. They have speakers that cost $100,000. So maybe they have some tricks that I dont know about. This is entirely possible. But it sure did not seem like that. They just gave me the computer controler and acted like it really didnt matter to them if I bought anything. No sales pressure at all. I had to get a sales person when I had a question about the source. I did not see the amp because it was in a cabnit. But the songs were all playing at the same time and he really seemed believable when he said it was just a multi-output SS amp running everything.

But I will have a look next time and try to do a very objective listen to both.

Also, he could easily been wrong about the burn in on the A2K.

I really dont want to sell anyone on anything. This was just my one-time experience.

Doesn't matter.  I just bought them.  They are set to arrive on Tuesday.

It just seems like such a waste of money when all the specs are the same except the cups.
And I'm sure they machine them for 5 bucks.

Oh well.  I was never going to be happy unless I tried them first hand, so it doesn't matter anyway.
I didn't mean to sound accusatory.  It's just that I was on the fence on these with a lot of hand wringing.
