Head-fiers who have spent time with both types of circuitry while powering their headphones, do you tend to prefer tubes or solid state.  Obviously some SS amps are better than some tube amps and vice versa, and also every headphone is amp dependent so it varies, but....

more often than not....

Are you are Tuber or a Solid Stater?

Boy, this sounds like it could be a "polarizing" poll, like are you a Democrat or a Republican? :-)  I am new to Head-Fi, and although I used to work at high-end audio dealers who sold Audio Research and Conrad-Johnson tube gear 30 years ago, I am getting my first introduction to entry-level tube audio ownership via a Maverick Audio D1-A1 combination with Sennheiser 650s.  So far, I like the fabled "tube sound," but I am too new at this to offer anything other than a "noob's" perspective.

I enjoyed your "20 best headphones" article and review of the Apex High Fi Audio Pinnacle; now if I could afford that kind of tube amplification, I'd give you an unequivocal answer to your poll question.

P.S. Your music server is totally awesome.

Thanks!!

Your user name is great!  I remember when I was in audio-engineer school there was a teacher I had which insisted that the human ear could only perceive differences of volume at -3db sound and I thought he was absolutely wrong, and as I got older I know for sure he was incorrect....but your user name made me remember all the fun arguments we had :)

im a tube person, not cos of the sound, but because of the way they look

I actually thought my Burson Audio HA160, sounded a bit better than my WA6, but I sold the Burson

Most of the music I listen to was created by tubes. I figure what better way to re-create the original sound.

That's a very funny and entertaining post....but I'm sorry in advance if people beat you up for it:-P

But yes Tube amps generally have a more "wow what's that, it's beautiful and looks serious" kinda appearance to people.

And what's even more important about you being in the tube camp is that you're a happy camper!

Started SS (HR Micro)

Went Tube (Millett Max)

Back to SS (160D)

I prefer the sound of SS (at least for now ph34r.gif)

Where's the hybrid option? I have a LD I+, that's essentially both.

Tubes!  Besides the great warm sound, the fun of collecting and rolling!

That should be an option!  But I figured it would be the Ralph Nader / Ross Perot of this election and just throw it all off.....

It's not quite as awesome as tube rolling, but I enjoyed switching Opamps when I owned a good SS amp.

I'd be curious to know if what the hard core vinyl enthusiasts vote for in this poll.

Mmm I think you may be right, technically the millett I was using is a hybrid.

I called it tube ph34r.gif
