Right, posting again to see if there is a good option aside from the DT-770 Pros...

20% Gaming(I rarely have sounds on in games), 50% Music, 30% Movies.

Music i listen to: Metal, rap, dub/drumstep.

For example: In Flames, Two steps from hell, Klaypex, Random dubstep songs, Trivium, Avain, Tupac etc.

Source: Youtube HD/HQ/flac/320kbps -> Mobo TOSLINK -> Pioneer VSX 915-S -> Front 6.3mm headphone out.

Replacing my JVC HA-RX700's, so as long as they're better than these, and as comfortable.

The Audeze LCD-2 is a great choice, if you want to spend "only" $895 and get one from TTVJ while he still has them on sale.

You will need a decent amp to go with them.  That will cost you about $250 or so minimum without a DAC

Maybe i should of put some kind of budget... haha. Lets just say absolute maximum would probably be around $500 or so for everything. But i am willing to go over.

Need a pair of full sized cans and a dac/amp combo (sth portable like E17) for Rap, Hip/Hop,Electronic music. Budget 400$. I like good amount of bass which is controlled and textured and the highs should not be ear piercing. i dont like the highs on my Mg7's. Your suggestions would be appreciated.

Regards,

Hi all,

I flipped through the last 10 or so pages of this thread but didn't see something specific to my needs, so figured I'd post.

Looking for headphones for use on my high-end gaming rig, and also suggestions on sound card vs. amp/DAC.

I prefer an immersive gaming experience, and do not require competitive positioning. I need headphones so I don't disturb my neighbors/roommate at night (NYC apartment building), but don't mind sound leakage at all as the walls are thick enough for that. As such, I've been enticed by open-backed headphones with the promise of a vast soundstage, but worry about the trade-off of bass that seems to come with it. Ideally I'm looking for something that retails for around $200 on Amazon, has an excellent, open soundstage, and doesn't sacrifice too much bass so when I blow things up, I really enjoy the experience.

So far I'm just completely stuck deciding between the following 5 cans: Beyerdynamic dt770 or dt990, Seinheiser HD 558 or HD 598, or maybe the AKG K702. Please let me know your thoughts on these or even if there is a pair I haven't considered.

For now, these would be plugged in to my motherboard's onboard sound, but I just know I will end up getting a sound card eventually (being a PC enthusiast, similar to an audio enthusiast, can be an addicting and expensive hobby!). Seems to me that the only two real options are the XONAR DX, Essence STX, or the SB Titanium HD, and I'm leaning towards the SB. Does it make sense to do this, or rather get an amp/DAC instead? Or will I need both a sound card AND amp to really power a nice pair of cans? Keep in mind I have absolutely zero portibility needs - these are specifically for my desktop computer.

Thanks for the help and I look forward to your input!

P.S. - Being a lurker on these forumns can make you pretentious about audio quality very quickly!

After just a few days of browsing, I find it impossible to ride the NYC subway anymore without scoffing at anyone using Beats or, even worse, default iPhone earbuds

OK, I've just been a IEM person now ever since I got into higher quality audio but I've been really wanting to try a good decently price pair of over ear headphones.  So can people recommend a headphone around the $200 price point (maybe up to $240 or so) that has good detail and clarity (they can have a warm signature as long as they're detailed) strong mids that can even be forward and clean punchy bass as well as clean non fatiguing highs.  Some suggestions would be greatly appreciated, oh and impedance I don't really want it to be higher than around 200 ohms to 250 ohms but nothing over 300 ohms for sure.

Also I might consider a good on ear phone also.

Other than possibly the Gemini HSR 1000 (which comes in at 50% or less of your budget), I can't think of a an over ear can that meets all your requirements.  There are some portable on ear cans that do.  I'm assuming that you do not want to go into basshead lite territory.  If you do, the M-Audio Studiophile Q40 plus Beyer ear pads is a good choice and currently about half your max budget.

I saw the HD 598 mentioned.  It is a very good can, but does not have punchy bass.

Your question is, as it pertains to cans, very specialized, and as it pertains to computer audio, off topic.

You'll probably get more and more helpful responses elsewhere on this forum (e.g. computer audio section) and/or on a forum that concentrates on computer gaming and audio.

I'm simply looking for something that sounds similar to the DT770 Pro, but is more portable, and is good for all types of music.
Budget is around $200
Didn't like Custom One Pro.
I have a cMoy BB V2.03

I haven't heard them, but MalVeauX has posted that he likes the M-Audio Studiophile Q40 with Beyer pads.

That's a list of 10, make that 13, cans.  You need to cull your list down to 2 or 3.
