Hey guys, I'm thinking that I'm gonna buy a new set of cans in the 300$ price range.  I'll likely be playing them from my laptop and through an E9/E10 setup.  I have two questions:
 
1) Would the HD600 or the DT880/600 be better cans to go with that amp/dac setup?  I listen to all sorts of music, mostly classical, opera, and classic rock.  I would also be using them for watching movies.  
 
2) What cables would I have to buy separately to go Macbook pro to E9/E10 to cans?

I am checking in to see if there would be any more opinions on phones that I will be getting.

Right now I have been thinking the Denon D2000 with a Fiio E17 DAC/AMP
 
I am planning to use this with PC, PS3, Ipod, phone for a large spectrum of genres, movies, and gaming with a lot of time in public so closed is kind of needed.
 
Budget is about $400
 
With the E17 for PC/PS3 use would I only need to connect the USB or will I need to connect another cable?

I also want to see if anyone knows of some good storefronts to go and demo some phones in Orlando FL, USA

From what I've heard from headphiles, they're better than Beats.

Nope, they are good straight out of anything.  However, the just warning you, the DAC in the Galaxy S2 is the worst one I have ever heard.  Massive amounts of noise.  Playing anything above 64 kbit on it is a joke it is so bad.  Trust me, I have one...

Guys, I'm back... So right now I'm looking at Ultimate Ears Triple.Fi 10. Would an over-ear closed headphone, blow these IEMS out of the water? Would it still be a good buy to get the UETF10? I don't like open ear just because other people can hear you...

Depends on what you listen to.  The MS-1 is good for rock and metal, the AD-700 is good for classical and gaming (massive soundstage).  The HD558 is decent for everything.  Are you planning on using these in public?  Because all of the ones you listed are open-back designs and leak sound.
 
Some others to consider: Audio-Technica ATH-M50, Sennheiser HD25-1 II, V-Moda M-80, Ultrason HFI-580/780 (if you like bass).

Budget?  If you're on a tight budget, you might be better off getting a good DAC and amp - the 280s are decent headphones.

1) probably the HD600 - I think they'll go better with the genres you like.
 
2) The E10 comes with a USB cable for Mac to E10.  You might need a 3.5mm male-to-male cable though to connect the E10 to the E9.  I can't remember if the E10 came with one, and I have no idea if the E9 does.

For PC, you'll only need to connect the USB cable.  Not sure about the PS3 - you may have to run the E17 off battery power and use a 3.5mm interconnect cable.  The E17 should come with a couple of them.

Supposedly.  Haven't heard them myself, but people say they have really good isolation, especially for an on-ear headphone.  You can demo them at many Apple stores if you're curious.

Maybe you can see if you can get the 598s for that price? If you're willing to spend the money, I'd say go for it, unless you really want to save some.

How much are you willing to spend? If your budget is under say $200, I'd say save a little more and go for something like the HD598s.

Not sure about the first, but regarding 2, I think the E9/E10 should come with the necessary cords.

Setup sounds good, but it may depend on what music/games/whatever you want to listen to. You connect the PC to the E17 via USB, then plug in your headphones.

A pair of over-ears at the same going price as the TF10s probably won't blow them out of the water, unless you really want soundstage, or have something against IEMs.

Just want to clarify since nobody seems to have given a straight answer:
 
E17 + PS3 via USB will only transmit power, and will NOT transmit any audio data. You will want an optical/TOSLINK cable to go from the PS3 (you will need to change your sound output settings) to the E17 for best quality.

trying to figure out which grado is best to get from the 60,80, 125 or 225. what are the sonic differences? the 60s look like they have the most low end bass from the headphone graphs.

If he's going to mod them, just start him on the 60s, as the modders on this forum have made them sound better than the 225s (allegedly). Something about all of them using the same drivers anyway.

Get them the 60i, no reason for anything more expensive if he's gonna mod them.

I'm currently using Audio-Technica AD700s. I've been using them for a year now... the sound quality is fantastic but I want to buy a new pair now, with much stronger bass. Source is going to be mostly desktop computer (using HT | Omega Striker 7.1 sound card) and ipod touch. I listen to pretty much all genres of music (except dubstep). Also will be used for gaming -- but soundscape doesn't seem to be that important to positional audio (with the AD700s enemies often sound farther than they really are, for example).
 
I've done a lot of reading and I've narrowed it down to the AT M50, Beyer DT770, and Denon D2000. I looked at the Ultrasone headphones as well but I don't want any of the S-logic / implemented virtual surround.
 
I was very close to buying the DT770 (250 ohms) but apparently they sound awful without an amp. I do not have an amp and don't intend to buy one either. IF I did get one it would probably be the Fiio E9, but then I wouldn't be able to use the headphones with my ipod.
 
Then I looked at the Denon D2000s but I hear they have a very widespread issue with a screw breaking or coming loose... which was disappointing considering I wouldn't expect these issues from $200-300 headphones.
 
Finally there's the M50... but I haven't read too many good things about it on here. They look really nice though.
 
ALSO I have a big head.

The M50s are very solid, what you're reading is mostly backlash to keep people realistic, because they are not end-all, be-all cans. You might also want to look into the HD25s and M80s, but I think the M50s will work for you.
