Nov 24, 2010 at 2:08 AM Post #16 of 29
thanks for your help everyone...so i got a few price quotes from shops in singapore....acc to the price akg 240mkII is the best deal...but im also getting the new HD598s for the same price as the 225i...any idea how the 598s compare to the grados and the akgs?

also the diff between the akg 242HD and the 240mkII is just cosmetic right?

K240S is the same as the K240 Mk II.  I have no idea about the K242 HD's ...

Depends on preferences, I've been reading about it yesterday for my SR225's. So much info is already here:
http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/189512/grado-bowls-vs-hd414-pads

I've got the s-cush coming, deciding to also buy those 414's for 4 euro's, to make the comparison myself.

If you ever get those HD598, I'm very interested in your thoughts on them, not very much info about them.

Good luck with the Grado's,

The SR60i's come with S cushions (comfies).  The SR225i's come with L cushions (bowls).  For each one, I'd recommend trying the other cushions too.  Cheap and easy way to try a different sound signature.  And then there are also the 414 pads, the flats from TTVJ, and the big Grado G cushions too.  But those last 2 are kind of pricey vs the others.

I'd never recommend the SR60i's.  Get the SR80i's or the Alessandro MS1i's.  Sound much better.  Both those comes with comfies too.

weird, here at the other side of the sea, the 414 pads are 3-4 times cheaper then Grado pads. Everything which is Grado, is ridiculously priced here in Europe (SR225 = 269 euro's = 356 USD)

Couldn't you get Grado pads from  eBay?  I've done that, and you get the real thing.  Just shipping might be a question.  And the flats only come from TTVJ, so I got the G cushions from him too.

Yes, got them from the Dutch local ebay, they got 5-10 hours in a comparison SR225-HD650, the guy chose the HD650's. Payed 160 euro (=210 USD) incl. delivery. That way, no waiting a couple of weeks, no tax. paying.

Edit: was talking about the cans itself, didn't read it correctly, the pads: those s-cushions were ordered by that guy, from USA. Delivery is delayed until first week of December, so I get them from him when he gets them; I don't pay for them, they're included in the 160 euro deal with him.

well, I've heard AKG 242HD, 240MKII, Grado SR125i, Alessandro MS1i, Senn HD598. Never heard 225i though.

For my preference song, like pop-rock-acoustic-jazz vocal, which is need good midrange and musical sound, I think MS1i and SR125 are the best among all of them.

242HD and 240MKII should be share same driver, based on my memory (never A/B ing them), they sound very similiar, but my friend who has chance to A/B ing them said that 242HD has a little bit more refine sound. AKG sounds great actually, but in term of musicality, it's still behind any Grado Labs product :)

HD598, when first time I listen it, don't know why my mind directly goes to HD600, but with lesser resolution. I admit that I'm Grado head, so I'm not impressed with this Senn. YMMV of course.

MS1i and SR125i, both of them sounds very energic and musical. SR125i will give more forward midrange and more pronounce treble, while MS1i has more laidback midrange and treble. In term of musicality, SR125i wins, but for some people, they found that MS1i has better balance sound, so MS1i better for allround.

SR225i supposed to be better than SR125i, so I bet that you will not regret your purchase. Once you can get the magic midrange from Grado, you will appreciate Grado Sound so much. :)
