Hifiman HE-4 Impressions Thread

Holy Toledo, this IS some list. I will not hijack this thread anymore (my apologies). We must get a DAC thread going sometime. Anyway, thank you so much and one last comment: for people using 220V like me, the used market is virtually useless. I've tried GON so many times; it's 110v most if not all of the time.

O dag.  I never would have noticed that.  My bad..

Since I'm selling off a lot of things, and preparing to sell more. I'm thinking of doing a tube pre amp into my pioneer. Wondering if it'd really make any difference on the he4. Although I got bad news that they're on order still so I probably won't even have the things for 2 more weeks. But, I have always been super interested in the garage 1217 project sunrise ii. Wondering how it may add to the overall performance of the he4 when used as a preamp into my sx727.

Or maybe the maverick tubemagic d2? As its a dac and a tube preamp...

I was going to mention that, but I deleted my post for some reason, lol. I have the D1 and the tube output is significantly warmer than the SS output. So much warmer that, to this day, I haven't heard a tube amp that changes the signature as drastically as the D1's tube. For that reason, I don't tend to use it (and I still haven't tried it with the HE-4). I don't think the D1/D2 is a bad investment though at all. They are both great DACs in that price range and they have the flexibility of having a tube output or SS output. You can have two amps hooked up at once, one through the tube output and one through the SS output, and never have to switch cables. I think I just prefer the SS sound over the warmth of the tube. I have a warm tube on Project Ember, but I can adjust output impedance to vary the amount of warmth I get from it. 90% of the time, I have it on it's lowest (0.1 ohm) which is the one least influenced by the tube. Going to the highest output impedance (120 ohm) doesn't warm up the signature nearly as much as the tube on the D1.

I'm debating whether I should get the HE-4.  I currently have HE-500 and am getting the Alpha Dogs.  IMO in stock form the HE-500's treble is to bright for me with their peak around 10kHz.  However, I am running them through a Pioneer Spec 1/2 combo with the EQ cut a bit at 10kHz.

Should I bother with the HE-4, considering that they are pretty much discontinued and are currently at an amazing price on HeadAmp?

If you think HE500's treble is too bright, HE4 is the opposite of where you should be going. Perhaps invest in a pair of Mad Dogs or Audezes.

Or, you know, mod the HE500s.

Can a Garage 1217 Sunrise 2 power the HE4? It's 920 milliwatts into 32 ohms.

Thanks! Oh and it's between the he4 and the 400 for my next headphone.

I have the dt880s and am looking for something a bit more "fun" for some listening sessions. Something with a little more bass impact.

Oooooo, that's a good question. I'm honestly not as knowledgable as I should be regarding amps and required power/voltage, but the Magni has a higher output than that and it does not cut it.

Sounds like the HE-4 would be a good move for you from the DT880.  I think the better pairing amp from Garage 1217 would be the Project Ember, and surely Thujone can chime in as that is his current setup (and he has previously owned the DT880 as well)

It's said they are best with more power.

Yes, FedEx tracking shows my he4 in town for delivery. Have to work today hope the wife is home when it arrives. I'm also thinking I will buy the mini x for my Xmas gift from my wife. My pioneer needs a little more cap and deoxit work. I didn't replace everything when I did it. And my left channel is cutting out sporatically. At 169 anyways I don't think I can do better. Only issue is, the only dac I have currently is the dac destroyer. Hopefully its good enough for the he4 for the time being! Can't wait to put these things on my head. Been a 3 week wait....

Got home package waiting for me. Unfortunately I somehow got very very sick from the time I went to work until I got home. Probably will unbox tonight. But not listen, my ears can't handle greatness right now... Should be ordering the mini x soon as well. But that I won't get until the 24th.
