Then I guess you're choosing to make the program you use the weakest link? iTunes will do ALAC from what I remember. I just looked up Spotify, it looks pretty useless.

C'mon, don't make life difficult for the man.
Different people have different level of needs/standards
 
Is it a must for him to follow your beliefs ?

Yes :p lol I'm just giving my opinion straight up.
 
For me, I like to find the best recording and encode it lossless, usually with FLAC. I don't choose a media player based upon looks, functions come first and the ability to play FLAC would be at the top of that function list. I prefer to put a little work in to customize and get it right for me than an out of the box solution. But that's just me, obviously iTunes is popular because people like it.
