Player for an external hard disk

Dear Head-fier Gurus:

 

I'm looking for a player I can plug an external, usb hard driver into. It needs to support FLAC and MP3 and have a remote control. It needs to have analogic and digital outputs. If possible, I'd like to stay below $500.

 

The squeezebox touch appears to be perfect, but many people have reported problems when using it to play an external hard driver.

 

TEAC makes receivers that do this, but I've read complains about sound qualify (are they founded?)

 

Oppo players can do this, but I found *nothing* on-line evaluating them in this capability.

 

Any suggestions?

Another alternative would be the Iomega® ScreenPlay™ Director HD Media Player (http://www.iomega.com/support/manuals/hdd2009/spdirector/en/consolidated/main.html#amrgn).  It does have a digital out connection.

 

Has anyone tried it?
