After almost 17 wonderful years, my beloved and trustworthy Technics CDP seems to be on its last leg. For almost every CD I play now, the laser keeps jumping back on the first few tracks (e.g it will be at the 1:23 mark and jump back to :48). I'm currently in the market for a new CDP but doing a search on Head-Fi has left me more confused.

Basically I'm looking for something in the $200-$300 range which is all I can afford right now being so close to Christmas, plus the fact that I just had to spring for a new PC.

I just need it to play redbook CDs and I'm not looking for a changer. I'll be using it with my Senn 580's and Grado 325's. My amp is a Gilmore V2 built by Antness. I also use Pink Floyd's X-Feed in case that has any bearing on what I should get. For what it's worth, I'd rather get something I can buy here in the NYC area rather than order it.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Tom

my advice, order online, save money and get good stuff.

for 300 bux u can get a nice DAC like one of those modded ARTs and use a dvd player as a transport or something, maybe a computer.

Don't waste money though on a lousy CDP just cuz the price is right. I did that and hated it, sold it 2 weeks later. You got to pay to play, or u can be smart and snag a good deal online ; )

Go to www.audiogon.com and see what's in your price range. A Philips 963SA or 763 would be nice and work fine.

A DAC won't do a whole lot of good since it will have nothing to feed it due to the malfunctioning CDP.

If you're the type to keep equipment around for 17 years, maybe you should go a little nicer. I know it's not my money but if you look at it split over 17 years, it's actually pretty cheap
