I had Matrix M-Stage and AKG K701 phones. I wasn't satisfied with Matrix, because stock model didn't have sound stage at all, and was dull and sterile. After few mods (changing opamp and capacitors) there was improvement in deepness, but low frequency didn't have precision and had too much reveb. I didn't remark any problems with heating. I have drilled holes for better ventilation. But suddenly, amp died. Probably due oscillations in the circuit (reveb?). (I don't have oscilloscope, so I am not sure.) The worst part was, that with M-Stage, AKG-s died too. Broken right driver.

So no more Matrix M-Stage, and no more AKG 701. I found AKG 70x too picky for everything. From type of music to amps and cables. Those headphones are just too much for average listener. I need something easy and efficient. Not something on what I have to spend another 2000$.

I bought ATH AD900. Maybe in the future I will buy something like AKG K240 or even ATH M50.

I would like to know how good is Schiit Asgard? (For low impedance headphones.) I am curious, because this amp is made in USA, and, so far, has received good reviews. But it seems that people here don't like it very much?! What is the point? Does someone know something, or has informations?

Thanks!

uhmm.... your story is a bit like me, I ended up having K701 because it need "complex" set-up, which is picky about source and amp

then I replace my AKG with ATH too, that's AD1000PRM, I only paired it with cheap Fiio E7, and it sounds really2 good, don't know why, but I can hear more detail now, even though definitely this ATH can't beat the spacious and naturalness of K701. (ATH is more colored, but more enjoyable)

The amp that I know good for ATH AD-Series is Graham Slee Solo, haven't heard Asgard though.

I agree that AKG are state of the art headphones. Above most others. And I am always sad when I think about what happened... Actually I got excellent results, but that was only after heavy modding and, for very short period (circuit wasn't optimised for such thing). So I am not going through all that again. Every mistake is too expensive. I am searching much simpler solution. That is why I went to low impedance ATH headphones (which are very efficient).
