Are the Q701 just repackaged K701?

if so, yes, agreed with op.

although we are a rare breed with our voiced opinions, they don't much leave these forums. Thus did AKG make a bad decision? for us yes! but for the refined "dr. dre beats" type i would speculate no.

There are so many people out there who don't spend even 1/10th the time researching a headphone purchase we do, but have the money to go with what they're told. those people simply are the majority populous and the leverage for marketing deployment.... sorry akg, but you just went down a few pegs on my wall. "if you make a good product, they will come"  its gonna leak if they are a re-badged k70x driver, then what??? put that cash towards a sweet new k1k platform if your marketing q line works!!!!!!!

cheers everybody, M

ps.i wont lie, i love akg, ive had two models...k702 and k601 but didnt have the right amp at the time... this is not my hate on akg, just a concern for a giant straying in the wrong direction. ( pay no attention to the dumb US model of success akg...) lol

I hope you're right. I really do - but let's also try and narrow down the target market of the new Q701's - if Dr.Dre is the patron saint of the 15 to 25 crowd, then surely Quincy Jones is the man who 40-somethings will recognise as the man behind Micheal Jackson - the biggest musician of their youth. These are people who grew up with Prince, Madonna, and WHAM! - These are people with a few dollars to spare, and next to no time to do "research" when there's iLounge and others of its ilk. These are people who have a Bose surround system in the Living Room for the family, but still want some personal space to rock out without their kids recoiling in horror as daddy puts on the Rick Astley record. Rather then have these poor saps waste a chunk of money at the Bose shop, I, for one am happy that some money is being spent on an arguably better product. That money will (if all goes according to plan) will fuel the true flagship AKG is sure to come out with - after the Double-Whammy of the T1 and the HD800, i'm sure AKG is not going to take this lying down.

Let's get this written down in big, bold letters - The Q701 is NOT meant for Audiophiles. Why are we all wasting time over a product which is clearly not meant for this market

Q701 is a un-launched product ...it might be different from K701/702

judging from just the appearance is is what fools do ( no offense to anyone) ......it just says that AKG really liked the K702 design ...so they dint change it.( if i am not wrong 701 was not much diff from 601 look wise)

the drivers are what make a diff. ....i they put k1000 drivers in 702 wont it sound different .??

I might be wrong ...but its just wrong speculate that they are just revamped K702.... unless there is a statement from AKG saying q701 has the same drivers as K70X....or has someone heard them??

As I've said in the other threads, I don't get why people are so surprised or up in arms, wondering what happened to AKG.  AKG is owned by Harman.  Harman wants to make money.  They're using the AKG brand to sell products.  It's plain, simple business.  Harman isn't trying to make head-fiers happy, or push the headphone envelope that much further.  They're trying to make money.  Questioning why AKG would be like Harman is like questioning why a Buick would be unreliable, or why a Lexus would be reliable.  Guess who owns them?

Personally I'm not basing the judgement in the looks, but in AKG's own words, look at my previous post, or go to AKG's facebook page. The design comes all the way back from the K400, and that has nothing inherently bad, but this is just a paint job.

I say let them make money. it'll only fuel the R&D for the true statement product. Everybody sort of company makes products that cater to the mass market to inject revenue into the organisation. let's face it-we're a fickle bunch with not enough wallets to support an entire company (HiFiman etc. notwithstanding) so let's just sit back and relax.
Also, let's also not forget that AKG has another business division - Microphones - that we are conveniently forgetting.

Now if they were to start making Lime Green microphones - HELLS BELLS!!!

I'm willing to bet that there is no R&D.  I don't think AKG (Harman) has much of an R&D department anymore.  They just have painters and plastic molders.  As far as I can tell, Harman like many other companies, has made a business calculation that to make money, they do not need to invest in R&D.  They don't need to create new high tech products.  All they need is an image of high-tech, and people will buy it.  Which is very true.  Just look at designer clothing.  Tommy Hillfiger doesn't actually make anything.  They get other company's products, put their name on it, and sell it for top dollar.  Harman seems to buy companies that have created an image of solid, intuitive products (these companies have created this image by making solid, intuitive products for years) and use that image to sell.  It takes a long time for that image to fade, and it's fairly easy to keep it alive through marketing and paint jobs.  Just like the only "green" thing about BP is their logo.

I'm not being pessimistic here, this is just how business and advertising work.

I don't think Sennheiser makes much money from the HD800, and I don't think they're trying to.  I think the HD800 is Sennheiser's Viper.  Dodge didn't make the Viper to make money either, they made it to create an image for themselves as a company.  Sennheiser wants to be thought of as the most technologically advanced headphone company around.  If you think about the looks and sound of the HD800, it does a pretty good job of that.  Even the head-fiers (who as a group are much more discerning than most people) who don't like the HD800 admit that it is a technical wonder.

I could imagine AKG making a new flagship for the same reason.  But I don't think Harman cares that much about AKG's image.  They have other companies, and likely will buy more companies, and if AKG stops doing as well I'm not sure it's a huge hit to them, they just adjust the target market, like what people have posted about Infinity.  The whole reason a company like Harman owns multiple smaller companies is to seperate the images of each smaller from the bigger one.  So that one company can sell two very different products without confusion.  Like Nabisco being able to simultaneously sell Oreos as well as some gourmet organic oatmeal or something.  So my guess is Harman's strategy is kind of a buy and burn type thing.  Why take a risk with a new flagship for AKG when they can just buy a new company that already has that image?  Maybe in 30 years Harman will buy Audeze

  if they let them...

^^

1. I've never liked Harman, but I always had appreciation for AKG....maybe the KQ-701/2 is the last dynamic air bender, only the future will tell.
2. You can get better car in the Viper price range.
3. Audeze will need to prove themselves for longer period of time to be taken in consideration.

This is true for any new company, but the LCD2 blows the K701 away in every aspect, so if Audez'e needs to prove themselves, what does AKG need to do?

AKG is not the same company. You will never see an improved high end can nor will you see any that were as good as some of the older models. you flaming Audeze makes no sense.
