Shotgunshane,

Try out the new Etymotic mc-5. It is available for $79 USD and is a smoking good value  Great quality build, two year warranty and amazing accuracy.  If you want a control function and microphone, you can step up to the mc-3 for $99 USD.  This series is the most accurate earphones under $100 and worth twice the price in terms of build and sound quality.

For more details check out etymotic.com

I've read about the Phonaks filter system and was intrigued; although having a fairly eclectic music taste I wouldn't want to change the filters every other CD lol. Have you considered any of the Sennheiser stuff as they've got some pretty decent bass to them. I've been hearing some good things about the Thinksound range of earphones so it may be worth checking out the 'Rain In Ear Wooden Headphones'.

Finally my PL-30's arrived.  Wow, I can't believe I got these for under $23 shipped!  They sound great.  The midrange is awesome and there is definitely a larger/wider soundstage than I've heard in my previous IEMs.  If I turn the adjustment dial to have deeper bass, the bass does get deeper and the treble also gets better extension but the great midrange disappears.  Excellent for the price even if delivery takes forever.  I'm going to burn them in for a few nights and see what improvements I get.  Tips are crazy tight.  Yet to successfully remove the mediums but I want to try the biflange tips.  Very, very comfortable so far.  I highly recommend these for those on a budget!

I'd like to keep this nice midrange and find something with better treble extension and a little more bass punch (not boomier, just punch).  Will the mc5, m1 or phonak perfect bass IEM's go in this general direction?

So the three odd accounts I managed to find whilst scouring this site before investing in the RE-ZEROs of their RE0s breaking has put you off them forever, even against the several billion people singing their praise? Huh.
I'm very happy with the RE-ZERO and have heard great things about the MC5. In terms of treble and bass punch, the ZERO has both of those... just not really any sub-bass.
