I have a pair of SR80's where the headset and cord are busted, but the drivers are fine. I have a set of Sony MDR-V6's where the headset and cord are great but one driver is blown.

Has anyone ever tried a rehouse of the SR80's or other drivers in the Sony headset? Just wondering if it's a worthwhile idea...

Any thoughts?

iinm the sony's are closed cans and for sure the grado's are open. unless you're looking to totally butcher the sony's i don't think i'd try it.

you could, if you're handy, make a set of woodies and re-cable your grado's. there are a few threads about this on head-fi.

I know that one is closed vs. open... will that really matter?

My feeling on the Sony's is that they are comfortable, but without a driver, useless. Getting a replacement driver seems pretty costly and difficult. Any other ideas? I'd replace both drivers, but I'm not sure where to go...

Listen to your grados and then place your hands so that they are covering the grills completely, that's what it will sound like closed which is horrible. A suffocating grado does not sound pleasant at all. Now you have more distance between your ears and sony pads, then you have sound reflecting off in inner housing. Sounds like a nightmare if you ask me. If you want the best comfort for a grado, get HD414 pads and reverse them.
