Grados in public....

I never realised how much they stick out your head before I bought them. I think I keep getting weird looks and I bought them for my mp3 player. Does anyone else think this and what's some good looking headphones for outdoor that arn't huge.

They're jsut unusual in a sea of ibuds and white and black colour headphones. That said, Grados don't isolate at all so why are you using them for outside use?

and the fact they stick half a mile out your head. I can't stand isolated headphones I like to hear what's going on around me and I skateboard so I need to hear my board rolling ect. It's unnatural because if you was listening to speakers you'd still hear the enviroment around you (Unless you cranked them right up)

I'd have to agree fully here. In all honesty, people are likely going to be looking if you wear anything other than IEMs in a world where ibuds are the norm in public. And even those who are a bit more educated in terms of audio reproduction will look because it's kind of neat to see someone using a headphone like Grados in public... That said, yeah, they do have pretty terrible isolation and probably aren't so suited to use in public.

Ah... In that case, and if you do really like the Grado sound, the pre-i versions don't stick out as far. Other than that, perhaps something like the portapros?

Oddly, I've run into quite a few people using Grados in public. One was an Asian women in NYC wearing them while eating at Whole Foods Market. Another was a boy at my university library. I've seen people wear black Grados outside in DC....somehow they've become oddly popular here (?).

Black Grados = Allesandros. Most likely MS1's.

The entire SR series other than the metal SR325 is also black. And I believe use the same plastic housing as the Alessandro MS-1's. (Though the SR225 also has a metal grill replacing the plastic, if you want to get picky about it)

Yeah, Alessandros are pretty rare in the open... Its usually SR60s and SR80s.... And there is only one black Alessandro, so of course of Alessandros it would most likely be MS1s...

Ive never seen someone wearing Grados, maybe someone can post a picture of someone wearing them and a picture of some one wearing something else so we can compare?

I have to agree that wearing Grados in public would ruin the sound. I tried it once and it sounded terrible. All the ambient noise just crippled the music. Even at louder volume levels.

As for how they look? They stick out much less than the Shure 840 and the AT M50. I think they're not so bad for a full sized headphone that's good for listening out of a DAP. If you want something that isolates better but you can still hear your surroundings and is a bit less bulky, the Denon 1001 is a good option. The M50 and 840 sound better but might isolate too much for your needs and are bulkier looking.

maybe they are looking thinking "what a selfish knob blasting out his music to everyone else like that"

No because I was on my bike and I turn it right down when I went into the supermarket. I took them off to check I couldn't hear them myself then put them back on.

I would wear my Grados out in public if it weren't for the leak. I kind of like the whole retro look. Now, I wear my SRH840s in public and those are even bigger and more conspicuous.

Getting a pair of Audio Technica ES7s will fix all your problems. Sadly, it's difficult to find them a super low prices now.
