Apex Peak/Volcano Review

What I don't get about the microphonics I'm experiencing is that it only happens with headphones.  My monitors are oh a whopping 2" from the Peak and don't set off any micro-phonics but the Q cable hitting the desk does, go figure.

I don't get it with the Q cable but I got it with the ALO chainmail cable to the point where I returned it.

It's likely just a screw thats backed out but until I get the ok from Todd I'm not opening it up while its under warranty.  Speaking of, any idea how many years on the Apex stuff.  Couldn't find any information.

It could happen.  I hope I can find happiness for less though :p  Especially since they just don't come up used... ever.

Before I go there, I will try the Mjolnir and Dynahi.  Maybe even the Bryston once they're out in the wild.

Any recommendations for tube suited to the Senn 800?  Granted my 800 is all of 12 hours old now but where the Sylvania BB is jaw dropping good with the LCD-3, the Senn is umm brighter than I like.  Hopefully it'll fill in over the next couple of days.

On the micro-phonics... am I the only one who is getting it?

If the Peak can take it (and it likely should), then this was my favourite 6SN7 variant with the HD800s:

Great to see some peak love.
I was crazy enough about it to own two.
Sold the liquid fire, and doubled down on apex.

Regarding the warranty.... I have talked to todd quite a bit, and he says on each occasion,"if something breaks, we'll fix it.".
He is a nice fellow, and he and pete have made a superb piece of kit.

Have i mentioned that it makes a killer pre?
I have it in my vinyl rig, and it is not a weak link.
This is: Vpi classic / dynavector xx2 / manley chinook / peak.

I had to have a look.

http://www.head-fi.org/t/495413/ic-eddie-current-balancing-act - He sold all his dynamic gear.
http://www.head-fi.org/t/526865/fs-ecba-balancing-act-ad1-version - Changed hobbies
http://www.head-fi.org/t/518624/fs-eddie-current-balancing-act-headphone-amp-australia - Bought a newer....
http://www.head-fi.org/t/515151/sold-excellent-condition-eddie-current-balancing-act-just-like-new - Move to Japan...

Wow this does tell you a lot about the amp.

I'm looking at getting a new amp early next year. I have the Peak+Volcano on the list. The WA5LE is also there. I'll have a look at the statement Schiit amps. The Balancing Act and the Super 7 look nasty but since I hear with my ears....

And only 1 of those sales is from a non 0 feedback, low post member.  Pretty sure I wouldn't send $4000 to a 0 feedback, 20 post member who despite next to no time on Head-Fi buys an EC BA?

At any rate, is Todd on vacation?  I've emailed him from two addresses going on a week now and nothing :frowning2:  Also someone chime in on the micro-phonic thing.  Very tempted to give this chap some money :p Herbie's Audio Lab  Tube, TRS and weight to try and 'fix' it.

i have herbie's dampers on both my peaks' tubes.
but, what i've learned with the peak is that if you have a microphonic tube, it will show up big time.

also, i've learned that you have to pay pretty careful attention to the tube pins.
any corrosion or bent pins, etc.  that will cause come crackle, or even tube rush.

the peak has a unique tube socket type.  so, it doesn't squeeze quite as tight on the tube pins as some of the others.
so any variation in thickness of the pins can mean poor contact...

anyways...  long and short of it is this:  find a quiet tube with clean straight pins, and you'll be set.
i've gone through a few vintage tubes before settling on the chrome top sylvania (quietest).  and also use the shuguang treasures.

5692 tubes should be great as well.  haven't tried one yet, though.
but, they have the additional support rods.
the brown base sylvania, or the red base RCA...  renown for being ultra quiet and low-microphonic...
that's what the peak will need...

Hmm wonder if the socket was changed along the way.  Mine is super tight.  Like two hands, and side to side wiggle to get it to budge.

Todd is generally pretty fast to reply. Maybe he's waiting for Pete's input? I'd just wait, you still have the Soloist to get you through this.

Umm yeah and then we have to deal with the aftermath in the discussion lounge. I bet it was gifted to them via paypal too. I gift all the time... under 300USD...

I'm going through this now with the BT's, two of them in fact. I thought there was a problem with my first, a new one with less than 50 hours, Todd sent me another used one, and now it's doing it. Tube rush means a static-y sound, right? Kind of the like hearing the ocean in a seashell? I have the crackle too. All my NOS tubes are fine, and since the BT's are new, I was starting to think maybe I had a problem with the amp. Is there a way to fix the corrosion issue? A cleaner or something? It's not a bent pin issue ( at least I don't think it is).
BTW, you have an impressive collection of gear. I am three shades of green with envy
