Sorry my bad, I should have been a little less vague. I have the W1000s so I can try out their pads. If they do well I'd probably buy a pair of L3000 pads.

I didn't see a w1000 replacement but I did see an ATH A1000, I wonder if they use the same pads?

It would be cool if one person got the L3000 pads and another got the W5000 and compared them to the O2 pads.

Anyway....

I love to see that comparison too. Hint, hint....

As far as replacement pads go. This is all I was able to find http://www.audiocubes2.com/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=audio+technica+replacement+pad&x=0&y=0

Looks like there are W1000 pads on audiocube. Weird, I must have skimmed right over them.

Hey, do you know if your W1000 pads are real leather or not? When you look at the w5000 pads they look the same as the w1000, I'm wondering if it's just leather vs faux leather.

Yeah, the W1000 pads are fake leather. Not really sure about the differences between the W1000 and W5000 though they do look similar.

Aren't all of the Beyerdynamic and German Maestro pads 4" in diameter?  They have a much thinner baffle to grip onto, but that might open up a ton of possibilities as well.  The AKG pads are a similar size.

Okay, I have a stupid question, as I'm starting to consider the building of my own pair.  Why is it necessary to cut the driver out of the original baffle, then create a new baffle for it?  Why isn't it possible to screw the old baffle onto the new cup?

Pads have a huge impact on the signature.  Just about any of the full size can pads will fit.  You might have to make an adapter.

I've tried K240 pads of various iterations, J$ Denon pads, Koss pads, T20v2 pads, O2 pads, and W11JPN pads.  The W11JPN pads were my favorites for comfort and SQ.  The Denon, K240, O2, T20s, and W11s are all withing a couple mm of each other diameter wise so one pad adapter can be used with a few of the best pads.  Beyer pads are probably 5mm-7mm smaller OD so they won't fit on the same adapter and bigger pads slip off a Beyer sized adapter.

I put a little how-to on the pad adapters in the ortho thread many moons ago, use Ludoo's search engine to find the post to get started making your own adapters if you don't want to tape them directly to the bezels.

A word on leather vs fake leather. W1000 (as stated above) are fake leather, W5000 are real leather, W2002 are alse real leather.

What are the W11JPN pads made out of? looked like something senhieser would use. Also, has anyone considered akg 701/702 pads?

W11 are suede.  A very good material for tuning bass heavy cans.

K701 pads are porous and very tall, so your ear is easily 5mm or more further away from the driver.  That rolls off bass quickly, then add the fact they leak and vent, and you'll have zero bass,  Zilch.  But it's an odd sound, so try it to hear it for yourself just to experience the audible sensation.

If the W11 pads work than the Ad2000 pads might work as well. I'll do some measuring, but they don't quite look 4 in. just by looking at them.

Been playing with pads and damping on my TPs..Right now they are tuned better with the O2MK1 pads. The cloned leather pads not so much.
The damping however has drastically improved the sound quality of the TPs..at a point where i can atleast listen to the headphone without wanting to reach for my wharfie Zebs..that's a very good development given that i've only heard  the TPs for less than 2 hours since i got them back from the loaner program.

So while I'm waiting to receive my chisel sharpener and my respirator I decided to mess around with those padauk and purple heart boards.

I really wanted to see what the colors looked like so I turned another single rough draft model. Note that its only turned to rough size and not the correct measurements.

I slapped some mineral oil + paste wax to give it a satin finish. Unfortunately the purpleheart had too much UV and turned brownish.. but no worries I still have that figured purpleheart blank to turn my real cups when my chisel sharpener arrives.

I call it Wonderland

Sand down the Purpleheart back to purple wood, then keep it light tight.

The W11 pads are the same size as the O2 pads, but you need an adapter becasue they have almost no lip to pull over the bezel like Smeggy does with the O2 pads.

Speaking of which Smeggy, I'm working on a technique to make the adapters with a lot less work and fuss.  If I'm successful, I'll make you a set and toss them in with the rest of the goodies.  That will let you use them with TPs and the Omegatret'pants.
