Not sure what you mean "...not worth buying online."  Seriously though, What does that even mean?

And I'd like to try out the UR-55's as well I just want to make sure that it's not just another repackaged KSC75. I really hope Koss went beyond that this time and came out with something entirely new.

They sure do look nice though and they are nice and heavy in the hand unlike the UR-40's.

I don't like buying cheaper headphones online just to try out. I have this bad habit of buying headphones I don't need, so buying them online and then possibly returning them is a hassle. If it's a more expensive pair I don't mind. Some cheaper items I just prefer to buy locally when I can. Of course with a $30 item I buy online i'd probably just be lazy and not return it anyway. I guess my point is, that the chance of keeping a cheap pair of headphones right now with all the others I have laying around is pretty low.

The UR-55's are definitely not a repackaged KSC75 or PortaPro. They sound a lot different and much better in my opinion. Right not I'm going to keep my UR-55's for exercise despite just upgrading them to the Koss DJ100's. Those don't really work as well straight out of an Ipod. With an amp they're amazing. They should sound much better from an ipod considering they're only 38ohm, but they don't.

Looks like the price on these has gone up across the board as a direct result of the buzz around here. Damn you head-fi!

Even so, in for a pair at $43 shipped. Or, should I go for the UR55, which are about the same price???? I already like the portapro sound.

Decisions, Decisions.......

EDIT: Apparently the UR55's are at Best Buy now. Easy solution, buy both, return UR55 if Maxell's sound better :)

Hello everyone, I received the Maxell DHP-II on August 14, 2010.  Here was my initial review/impression from it...

ALRIGHT!  I am finally using the Maxell DHP-II right now!

So far I am testing it with some hip hop/rap/baltimore club music because they are heavy bass genres and still touch the highs at the same time..

So what are my thoughts?  I am experiencing some intense high's through these headphones.  Remember, I am coming from no experience with headphones, but either way I have a feeling many would agree.  These headphones are really clear and "intense" on high sounds/frequencies (intense is the word that comes to mind).  Really clear sound (and maybe I feel they are "intense" because I am not used to listening to quality headphones!).

The bass can be well spread like thick peanut butter yet it manages to punch when you need it to..it's really clear at the same time (although I am sure the bass is clearer and richer on more expensive headphones..c'mon though, these are $30 usd).  No matter what you listen to it shows up and it does not overpower.  The bass always sounds like it has some depth to it (it doesn't disappoint--it's not shallow or lacking).

I'm not sure how to judge mids yet because I am so new to this..sorry.. I can tell you the highs and bass are showing up nicely, and with pretty good quality! :D

Overall I can tell you that anyone being introduced to their first pair of headphones, or wanting a budget set ($30 usd), will not be disappointed from the Maxell DHP-II.  If you want good bass, they have it.  If you want clarity on the highs, they have it.  Although I have nothing to compare these headphones to, I am really glad I got them.  Even though I am very aware there are better headphones out there as I use these headphones, they sound and feel like high quality for the price (others have said these HP's are comparable to $80-$100 range)!  Also, I am in the first hour of listening, and I am pretty sure they will get better with a little more usage.

Thank you so much everyone, couldn't have made the choice without this forum!  :)

-trancetunes  (new owner and of MAXELL DHP-II..recommending them to anyone that wants to circumaural headphones and only has $30 usd).

Horrible QC on these headphones.

First pair brand new from amazon merchant, right driver was defective, the coil was detached from the magnet.

Second pair brand new after I returned the first one, same problem, coil was fine but the driver was missing 90% of the bass impact/extension and the voice was lower than the left side.

RMA'd direct to Maxell, waited 5 weeks, they sent me back a brand new sealed pair. This time, the LEFT driver had the same problem as the second pair on the right driver.

Good thing this whole nightmare only cost me $20 shipped for the first pair, + $13 for return shipping fees total.

I guess it's comforting I'm not the only one. Mine had that exact problem with no bass in the left driver. Vocals seemed about equal in my pair. Out of the box, though, mine sounded perfect. It was only after about 8 hours of burn-in that the imbalance appeared.

I purchased them from J&R, and managed to convince them to RMA them (for store credit) and pay return shipping. At least I can put the money towards something decent. They must use a really horrible quality driver in these. Maybe the housing design is why they sound good. I've read recently of someone's headband snapping for apparently no reason as well, so the QC might not be limited to the drivers.

sorry to hear about this.. but i think some people are just getting unlucky :S   which is STILL not a good sign, but im seeing about 30% negative, and 70% positive.  mine have equal sound and bass on both sides still..im overall really happy for the 27 dollars i paid total.

If anyone is interested selling me their half dead pair for a reasonable price or have a half-dead pair that need a driver replacement I will gladly sell mine for $15 shipped or buy a half working pair for $15 shipped.

This makes it even harder for me to choose between a pair of rp htx7s or the maxell dhp ii. sq vs. build quality. :/

If it make you feel any better, I just fixed my pair and testing it right now.

The driver's voice coil had too much glue or whatever was on there compared to the other side so the driver was not able to freely move in and out to give a full-range sound.

Took some tape, gently pulled on the driver until it loosened up until the sound quality matches the properly working one.

I gotta say, amazing sound quality for the price paid.

Yep, I think I'm gonna bite the bullet and get these. I've been in need for some good circumaural portables for a while. I just have to be pretty gentle with these haha.
