I am a bass head and wondering which IEM I should get. I am deciding between the Sony xb40's or the Skullcandy FMJ. I want the bass to sound clean and the highs to not be so harsh.

You're going to get a flood of people responding "neither," and probably justifiably. Sounds like there's a world of IEMs you should be made aware of. If you're nice, you can probably coax this thread into something productive to that extent. heh.

edit: mention what sort of music you listen to, and the responses will likely be more specific in recommendations.

I've heard a few of the Skullcandys in the sub $50 range and they were very disappointing.

In that price range, Best Buy carries the MetroFi 170 for $40, (or the MetroFi 220 at 50) prior to any kind of employee discount. I would consider those over the Sonys, and I would consider some paper cups with strings attached over the Skullcandys. edit: link added

I see the Full Metal Jackets are part of their higher end stuff, so I should reserve judgement.

Sony XB40EX shows better bass response (deep, punchy, heavy) and overall clean sounding IEMs.

Ok so I actually bought both and was surprized at the sonys. They sounded much bigger than the skullcandys. I felt I heard more from the sonys including bass and highs. The skullcandys are poor for sound but since I have an iPhone I will use it more for talking and use my sonys for music.

Try some MEElectronics M9's. Plenty of bass. Sound great overall for the price. I think you will be amazed. Much better than the FMJ's  IMHO. There are also the Hippo VB's you should check out. I've never heard the Hippo's, but they get good reviews from bass heads.

good to hear they turned out well for ya. I've heard other people mention liking the bass on those.

Second that. Bass-orientated earphones while retaining clarity.

But then again the Meelec M9 has lesser bass than the Creative Ep630 or Sennheiser CX300.

Oh yeah then i add in more reccomendations, the Meelec M9, Creative EP630, Sennheiser CX300.
