oops didn't see the not including video models. Why are video models not included? If you can include the ever-so-cool Ipod you have to include the video playing Archos.

Maybe list Ogg support for the Karma and iRiver, and the parametric EQ of the Karma. Also the greater OS compatibility and the dock line out of the iPod.

Both Rio and iRiver support OGG, so its not unique...

Line out on the iPod (3.5mm analog) is not unique as NJB3 has a dock with this, though its no longer for sale..

What exactley does parametric EQ mean? (i don't know)

The NJB3 uses a 5 volt DC input and will run off an IPAQ extended battery pack (4 AAs, same DC plug).

The IHP-120 uses a 5 volt DC input and will run off a power pack used for portable external 2.5 inch hard drives.

Here are some IHP-120 features that MAY be unique:

1) SRS / WOW EQ
2) Text reader
3) LCD remote displays all major info (song name, bitrate, EQ, A/B, battery, song time, song chron #, folder name, shuffle mode and more)
4) Built-in external mic input with true pre-amp support

Austonia, I see the Nomad Zen and the Xtra are both available with 60GB of storage. Does one sound better than the other in your opinion? (I know, I know! I ought to audition them for myself, and I will ... eventually.)

Odyssey 1000 also has WOW effect
iPod and Xcelf HD500 also has Text Reader

Please explain what you said about the iHP-120 having "mic input with true pre-amp support" ..??? I see on the specs that it comes with an external mic but where does it plug into? Is there a dedicacated Mic input port and if so what size is it? (3.5mm analog?)

I can't find anything on the net about this.. anyone have an idea? All the iPAQ battery packs I see are custom-fit "Backpacks" which slide on the IPAQ, not external AA battery pack like the Belkin one for iPod...

actually you can make a AA battery pack for the iHP-120 (the koreans did it) so thats not an ipod-unique feature if you want i could rummage around for a link...
also theres been rumors about the iHP-120 having 32mb of buffer memory from iRiver customer support but we are still checking to make sure the truth of this...
also the iHP-120 has an optical in, not sure if thats unique tho
also the RCAs ability to rate tracks isnt unique as i think you can do that on an iPod
im not sure if this is unique (dont think it is) but the iHP does support linux
plus theres some of the things iPaq man mentioned
thats all for now...

well .. if you have to MAKE a battery pack, i still would not count that because its a custom job, not something anyone could buy..

NJB3 also has optical-in

I had a ver.3 iPod when they came out, I do not remember being able to "rate" tracks - was this in a new firmware or something?

You can find the Ipaq battery extender packs (NJB3 compatible) at http://www.semsons.com

It is possible that one of the USB to cell phone cables is compatible with the IHP-120 DC input jack (same jack as Storix and Iomagic external drive enclosures). If that is true, then one only needs a battery pack or adapter that has a USB port (see semsons.com).

BTW, you can buy the exact same battery extender pack minus the power plug from Radio Shack. Then you solder the plug you want. I did this to make a Rio Nitrus power pack.

Someone posted an email from Iriver support on the Iriver user forum about the IHP-120 buffer size of 32mb. In my tests using groups of song files, the music buffer is at least 16mb. I presume that some buffer space is also used to store the directory tree structure. That might add up to the 32mb.

@austonia
i never actually owned an iPod i've only played w/ one but when i was investigating buying one I saw this thing on there website where you could give your song a number of stars and itd upload the rating to iTunes and help in playlists or something. I'll look for it on their website...

Edit: Yeah i found it at.... http://www.apple.com/ipod/autosync.html, its in the right column
