Sorry for the thread title being incredibly presumptuous, but this is at least what I hope to achieve. I did a search for "reference" and saw so many threads asking for reference albums, and just by reading all those threads, there are some obvious ones that are commonly mentioned. I was hoping that all of these albums could be compiled via some sort of hierarchy through the following method:

1) I'll post an initial list of albums that can be considered as reference records. Beside each album is a number, which denotes the number of people who concur with the album being a reference recording; obviously they all start at one. Here is the list:

[01] Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon
[01] Massive Attack - Mezzanine
[01] Porcupine Tree - In Absentia
[01] Rush - Moving Pictures
[01] Eric Clapton - Unplugged
[01] Metallica - Metallica

2) The next poster copies the entire list and can do either of the following: a) add a new album with [01] as its "score"; b) add one point to an existing album; c) subtract one point from an existing album. So, for example, if the next poster agrees with DSotM, disagrees with Metallica's s/t and would like to add Rage Against The Machine's s/t, his updated list would look like this:

[02] Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon (+1)
[01] Massive Attack - Mezzanine
[01] Porcupine Tree - In Absentia
[01] Rush - Moving Pictures
[01] Eric Clapton - Unplugged

[01] Rage Against The Machine - Rage Against The Machine (new)
[00] Metallica - Metallica (-1)

NOTE #1: It would help noting how you updated the list like how I did in parenthesis for the example above. If you feel like re-ordering the list based on the updated number of "votes", feel free to do so.

NOTE #2: Do not delete albums when they reach [00]. For now, I think we could allow voting down an album already at zero, if only to emphasize how bad of a suggestion it was to begin with.

NOTE #3: I'm not going to be strict (yet) about this, but I'm not keen on people specifying the type of release such as  "Dark Side of the Moon SACD" or "Kind of Blue remastered." You could mention it as a note or comment on your post outside of the list, but I think avoiding this kind of segregation would keep things simpler. Let's leave some work to be done in terms of letting other people research which issues sound the best and the like.

NOTE #4: Don't vote more than once for an album. You can post as much as you want as long as you are updating the list for an album that you haven't acted on yet.

That's all there is to it, really... I think it's a fairly simple method and if a lot of people participate, it might prevent the same thread from coming up over and over again by serving as a "quick reference." This thread could even get stickied, I guess.

So to get the ball rolling, here again is the initial list (make sure to read and understand the method above):

[01] Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon
[01] Massive Attack - Mezzanine
[01] Porcupine Tree - In Absentia
[01] Rush - Moving Pictures
[01] Eric Clapton - Unplugged
[01] Metallica - Metallica

I was looking for something exactly like this - the format is perfect, I think.

It's a shame that a project thread like this was stillborn...  Well, I'm going to try some thread resuscitation!

One thing that could be done every once in a while is sort the whole thing by number of votes.  All the zero or negative entries could be moved to a "Reckoning" section a-la Woot or the NCAA FB/BB rankings.

Sorry if I added too much!  : D  I went through my mental list of reference CDs and tried to stick with the ones I use most/are best.  If you think I've added too many, I'd be glad to go ahead and remove some of them...  But I figured the list is young and could use a little beefing up.

Oh - I added Oasis's What's The Story (Morning Glory) because it is one of the worst recorded albums in history.  As such, it deserves to be used as a reference as to what a truly horrible recording sounds like on a given system.  Also, I know The Social Network has only been out for a week - but it's already earned its place in my reference album list.  I love how Reznor is approaching music distribution now too - it's too bad every artist can't do the same.

huh... is everyone here burned out from all the reference recording discussions through the years?

Yes.....

OK....So DSOTM...which version? SACD? Black Face? Black Triangle?

I see Time Out...OK...which version? Sony Gold? Regular re-issue? Single Layer SACD? Legacy re-issue? Vinyl? Mono / Stereo????!?!?!?!

I know for a fact that some of those albums on the list above are compressed to hell....

We should all get to work on a definitive list WITH catalog/pressing numbers and mastering information and keep it as a sticky.

Good idea, LFF!

Though I think the new Wiki here might work even better. If a reference thread got to several hundred pages, it would become difficult to navigate and connect comments on the same album hundreds of posts apart. If we put it into a Wiki, it'd be much easier to browse.

Wiki sounds like a great idea but I have no idea how to do that.

What I was thinking was a thread where the first post could be updated. The bad thing is that some people feel some pressings are superior to others and vice versa. There must be an agreement and/or a preferred version with other suitable options. Also - what about popular sonic turds that will always be turds - polished or not (ie, Led Zeppelin)?

EDIT: HERE WE GO!

Okay guys, I think you're missing the whole entire point here.

This isn't supposed to be the end-all, be-all list of recordings and pressings...

Don't get me wrong - that's a great idea.  I just don't think it's what the OP intended for this to start as.

Then it's pointless! Absolutely pointless. Why? Well, let's take a title like Grant Green's "Matador" on Blue Note. A reference recording if there ever was one BUT you would never know it was a reference recording if you heard the recent RVG release or the previous RVG release. You also wouldn't be able to tell it's such a stellar recording by listening to the vinyl issue nor the original CD mastered by Ron McMaster or the japan re-issue. Ah, but if you listen to the 45RPM recording on Music Matters then you can really appreciate what an excellent recording it really is. However, this is really comparing apples (CD) to oranges (LP).

Likewise, there are huge differences between different releases on the same format. There have been countless re-issues on Van Morrison's "Moondance" on CD. However only ONE CD has the mastering done correctly for it to sound great. Other versions use the wrong mix or are compressed to the point of distortion. Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" is also often used as a demo recording but only one CD has the entire album in it's full dynamic range. This goes for all formats, CD, LP, SACD, etc.

Also, IMHO, the point of making such a thread is for helping people attain such reference recordings - that's why when I post something about a recording I provide a direct link for that album. If you leave it up to the person reading to do the research for the best version of a particular album then they will be up s*&t creek for a while because it's difficult to find all the relevant information to distinguish certain pressings from others, let alone making sure that such information is correct and presented in a non-confusing way.

If I missed the point then by all means continue without me.

And that's what makes this thread best a work in progress - not a final product.  Easy to contribute and discuss, then you can go off and compile your list of the releases to own for specific reference...  If you want.

I'd argue that even poorly mastered versions of an album are important as references, because there sure are plenty of albums that don't have any good releases.  Guess what?  I still listen to them.  I'm not uptight about the recording - if it doesn't sound like total crap, I'll enjoy it.  If it sounds particularly good, I'll set it aside.  If it pushes my system in some unique way, I'll add it to my reference recordings list.  This includes the remastered CDs of Led Zeppelin (which I'm sure you'll find to be horrible), and Massive Attack's Mezzanine - which has distortion/buzzing in the bass to be sure.  Yet another example is the Julie London compilation The Ultimate Collection - noisy recordings and odd, sometimes poorly done stereo - but it still sounds great.

What the hell do I know...  I'm a source-last guy anyway.  And the few times I've compared different releases, it's been original releases of vinyl versus CD (SRV's Couldn't Stand The Weather, Talking Heads' Speaking In Tounges, the hell if I know the exact issue right now) and there was little to no difference as far as I could tell...

But hey, I'm listening to $4000 speakers and $2500 worth of pre/amps with a $200 CD player and turntable...  and I would still upgrade my speakers first.  Well, actually at this point I'd upgrade my amps first if my CD player hadn't just died on me.

I still think you missed the point.
